    Tool brands and buying habits

Tekton is a company I’ve tried to like. But you can buy similar quality for cheaper if you do a bit of digging around. Nothing they offer is great but when compared to the completion at similar price points it’s pretty good. I’ll go so far as to say some things are over priced. I haven’t tried...

    Tool brands and buying habits

I grew up fairly poor in a rural area. My options for tools as a teenager were Walmart, a Southern States co-op, True Value Hardware, and Napa. As a teenager most my tools came from WalMart. Mostly because I couldn’t afford the tools Napa and Southern States sold. I bought a few things from...

    Adjustable Wrench Mods

Exactly! I never understood the hate for adjustable wrenches. In the real world they are how things get done. 99% chance that every plumbing fitting in your house was assembled with a combination of adjustable wrenches, channel lock pliers and pipe wrenches. The miles of guard rail you pass...

    Adjustable Wrench Mods

That would be a great space saver in a tractor tool box.

How often do you use 1/2" sockets/ratchets?

All my impact sockets are 1/2” drive. But with hand tools I usually switch to 1/2” drive when the socket size goes over 19mm. Of course they’re exceptions. I’ve found a really comprehensive set of 1/2” drive sockets say from 10mm thru 32mm and 3/8” thru 1-1/4” can pretty much replace 3/8” drive...

    Amazon wrenches

So here’s your update. Here’s the JETECH 15/16” wrench I ordered from Amazon. First of all I didn’t realize it was going to be satin finish but that doesn’t matter to me. Honestly I’m pretty impressed with it. Finish wise I’d rank it right in there with Tekton and Gear Wrench and a step...

Well I did it-- X lock angle grinder

They actually work. This is what my buddy came out with when I asked if he had a chainsaw while we were working on his pole barn project. I’m not going to say its a good idea but they definitely cut wood

    Amazon wrenches

I ordered the 15/16 JETECH as an experiment. I’ll keep you guys posted I’m trying to fill out the skips in a set of secondary tools that live in a mobile box and kind of float between vehicles and locations. It’s not something that gets used a ton so I don’t want to spend a ton. But when I...

    Amazon wrenches

So just how good (or bad) are some of these wrenches sold by Amazon? I was looking to fill in some gaps in a secondary set of tools that honestly don’t see a ton of use. Looking to buy a 15/16 combination wrench, 7mm combination wrench and 9mm, 11mm, and 15mm ratcheting wrench. Brands include...

Anyone went from Red to Yellow and regretted it?

Milwaukee has the 12v market cornered and couple that with the fact the m12 batteries actually fit in the grip of the tool versus hanging off the bottom like a traditional 18/20v tool. It’s no comparison. You might as well run 20v because the battery on the dewalt 12v isn’t much smaller. Bosch...

    Complete mechanics socket set sources.

I sort of agree with this. On my work truck I only carry 1/4 and 1/2 drive it freed up quite a bit of space to eliminate the 3/8 set and for the most part I haven’t missed it. In my shop I’ll almost always grab 1/2 drive over 3/8.

    Starting out

I’m of the opinion that once you get past a certain size range the quality of the wrench matters less. The simple fact is there’s so much steel in the larger sizes failure is very unlikely even in a lower quality tool. Now to totally go against that train of thought. My most used wrench set is...

    Tool allowance

A bare tool from whichever brand you use. Either a duplicate of something you use often or something obscure that would be nice to have a few times a year. Either way it’s free. Guarantee you can find something in the Milwaukee m12 line that would be useful

Do you often use a 1/4" nut driver screwdriver?

I use a 6 in 1 or 11 in 1 occasionally in hex head screws. Almost never use an actual nut driver. If I’ve got enough screws to warrant a nut driver I’ll reach for a 12v impact almost every time

    Festool Proliferation

I don’t own any and don’t know anyone who does. I’ve never seen one in the wild on a job. Actually I’d never heard of the brand until about 2015 when I read a forum post about how great their miter saw is. I’ve done some research into the brand over the years and come to the conclusion they...

Haven't been on forum in forever and researching power tools

Most people start with a drill and impact driver and expand from there. The problem with this being all the major manufacturers make a pretty decent drill and impact driver. It’s the more specialized tools where you start to see differences. You need to figure out a list of what tools you...

What do you use your tools on

It’s kind of hard to explain. Basically I’m a carpenter/remodeling contractor with a semi professional wood shop who decided they wanted to start farming. I’ve got two newer tractors a fleet of mostly ancient attachments. Multiple large outbuildings, a house built in 1993 that’s been under a...

    Unpopular Opinion - Tool Storage

I’d rather have a well laid out service truck with dedicated job specific tool bags and a general use tool bag. Power tools ride in their own compartment. Stuff I use constantly stays within easy reach. Keep a spare empty tool bag so I can pick and choose what I need and load it up. At this...

Look Out Milwaukee Here Comes Bosch

Bosch is pretty hit and miss. The CS10 circular saw is a total lemon. Plastic blade depth and bevel adjustments that break off easily and a weak base plate design that flexes if the blade is set to anything less than full depth. I actually had two of them because the first one was so bad I...

Looking to buy a miter saw

I think it’s a common belief among homeowners and hobby wood workers that miter saws are general purpose cutting tools. But they are really not. They are designed for finish carpentry and cabinetry applications. Large capacity saws are geared more towards 12 inch ship lap, really wide crown...
