    Need Steel Drilling Help

Buy the harbor freight drill press. While you’re there buy a center punch as well. Make a template for hole location (can be as simple as a piece of poster board). Use cutting fluid. Heck WD40 is better than nothing. Decent quality HSS bits will do what you want. A Cobalt bit from any box store...

    7 Inch Fiber-Resin Cut-off Wheels

The Lenox Metal max blades are a better choice. Last a good while, won’t shatter and don’t get smaller as you use them, But I’m convinced they actually cut slower than the abrasive blades in a circular saw, I used to keep a couple of abrasive blades on my work truck for random stuff that pops...

    Cutting Aluminum Track?

A 60 tooth carbide blade in a miter saw will do a fine job. Wear your safety glasses. I’ve cut hundred of pieces of aluminum angle, carpet trim and random extrusions (shower door track especially) with great results

got an old toolbox on CL filled with stuff; what to do with it all?

All this stuff is gold assuming it’s not rusty used junk. I know we have different applications but I farm and all this stuff can save the day

got an old toolbox on CL filled with stuff; what to do with it all?

I tend to keep bolts nuts and washers. I sort them by size and throw them in bins or other containers that live on a shelf. I don’t go so far as to sort by length. So a bin may contain everything from an inch long to 6 inches long. I actually use a lot of it and have a decent hoard. If I need a...

I need a replacement 1/4" screwdriver bit set. Which one is the best?

I keep a set from Dewalt to cover all the random stuff you rarely use but need to have on hand. Then I buy bulk Phillips #2 and T25 (The stuff I actually use) impact bits from either Milwaukee or Dewalt.

    Multi-bit screw drivers… I feel like I’ve been screwed

It’s hard to beat a regular old fashioned 6 in 1. Even the cheap ones are pretty good. I’ve got them stashed everywhere and probably own a dozen or more at this point. On the flip side I really dislike the 10 in 1 and 11 in 1 drivers and find them pretty fiddly and not as nice to use. I can see...

    Gearwrench kit or Tekton

I’d probably just go to Harbor Freight. The Quinn sets are nice and priced comparatively to Tekton. I like the Pittsburgh Pro ratchets and they have a nice assortment to choose from. Honestly the Pittsburgh Pro socket sets are good for the money they just aren’t as comprehensive as the Quinn...

    Anyone using battery adapters ?

I’ve got an adapter from a seller on eBay to allow me to use Dewalt 20v batteries in a Hitachi framing gun. It works great and doesn’t really add any additional bulk and or weight. I think it cost $20. I’ve had it a couple years

    Purchasing Full New Tool Set

Same. The mechanics tools in my wood shop pretty much consist of a cheap basic 3/8” socket set, a handful of random wrenches, some hex keys, a T25 T handle and a pair of small channellocks

where can i find a timeline or history of cordless power tools

The first cordless drill I bought was a Milwaukee 12 volt nicad. It came from eBay of all places. I remember mailing the USPS money order the day after winning the auction. Ran that thing for years professionally went through several sets of batteries. Finally bought an 18 volt Dewalt nicad and...

Buying a new Sub Compact Utility Tractor

I’ve read the whole thread I honestly don’t know what advice to give you. One major point everyone seems to be missing is a modern SCUT and a Ford 1210 are not really comparable. One is a slightly upscale modern day evolution of a garden tractor. The other was a miniature farm tractor...

    EDC Utility Blade… Again…

I’ve been griping about this for years. It’s still the best folding utility knife on the market that’s cheap enough to be considered a consumable.

Tool hauls brands you look for and brands you pass up

I don’t buy alot at flea markets. Most the tools in flea markets around here are either priced at or above retail or junk. Most tool sellers put the good stuff on eBay and bring the scraps to the market. You do occasionally find a gem but it’s rare. I have better luck at yard sales/garage sales...

Tool Brands you cannot stand . . .

I haven’t used one before either. I’m not trying to argue. I’m just posting real world experience and my opinions on the tools. My personal opinion is the pliers wrench was an answer to a problem that didn’t exist. I’m going to pick one up and give it an honest chance.

Tool Brands you cannot stand . . .

Well I guess it would depend on the faster we but I’m going to say the short answer to that is absolutely not. I’ve had 4 foot pipe wrenches on fasteners smaller than that and needed a cheater pipe.

Has anyone noticed a drastic decline in Wiha quality?

Pretty sure they were the terminator bits the ones that were 8 or 9 bits in a small case with a magnetic holder. Think they were $10 on clearance for $5

Has anyone noticed a drastic decline in Wiha quality?

using a 12 volt Bosch drill on the cabinet hinges. Definitely using the right bit.

    State of emergency tools/equipment?

We are pretty self sufficient. We live out in the country and farm and most people would consider us homesteaders. So most of what I consider common use tools would fall under emergency tools for a lot of people. Tools that get used after every storm: chainsaw, propane camping style stove...
