Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

Roger that. They do look really crusty rusty. I sprayed 'em good w/CRC Freeze on one side, and PB Blaster on the other; never tried the CRC before. I guess will try to loosen them tomorrow. Btw, what kind of metal wheels do you use for those domed-top (carriage bolt head looking) rivets, the...

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

. . .by "I would try removing the bolts on the inside of the lower arms ~" ...you mean all 4 bolts (not just the 'inside' 2 bolts) at the subframe, right? As opposed to the rivets?

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

Thanks. And right, that's true about them probably outlasting the car. . (you know, they're missing a *nodding* emo here) So the next course of action is to go see if I can loosen those 4 bolts on each side, right? And if I can't, then take the 4-1/2" angle grinder to the rivets; which oughtta...

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

Thanks Wrench97, those sound like great ideas. I hadn't even thought of replacing the control arms while I was looking at ball joints @ rockauto ! They are 4 bolts, but I haven't tried loosening them yet; after just reading your brilliant idea !=) That would be so great to not have to drill...

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

Control arm ball joints wouldn't separate from steering knuckle pinches. Had to pound a 'Ball Joint Separator' (pickle fork) with a sledge hammer, whacking the pickle fork countless times for at least 20 mins or so, from three different angles before the ball joint started to come down from the...

Strut spring compressor, not Wall mounted...

I've used the Powerbuilt spring compressor several times, and each time it's worked great. I wouldn't rent or buy any other 2-Pc compressor of lesser quality. Powerbuilt Tools Kit 1, Strut Spring Compressor Kit 648627: Advance Auto Parts...

Another tool with incorrect country of origin!

I completely understand. And I'd feel/think the same way as you do. It opened in our chrome, but very very slowly.

Another tool with incorrect country of origin!

My Channellock adjustable wrenches were made in Spain, perhaps by those Irimo or Irega manuf co's. Very nice quality. Some McPherson Struts I recently bought were made in Spain, and had much better welds and overall quality, optically, than any other struts or shocks I ever recall seeing...

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

I have a brother-in-law, in Tennessee, that does similar work. He used to drive for many years, but got tired of being away from home & family so much. One year the floods were so bad, and unexpected one night, that they didn't get any of their tools out of the shop before it all flooded approx...

    Tool Rolls

Tekton's tool rolls are very basic, but stout, thick, well made and work great. All you have to do is roll them up and they stay closed due to velcro sewn onto roll. For travel toolboxes, I don't like the ones with straps & buckles, or even those squeeze clips; just more of a hassle to get in &...

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

Interesting. Must be nice having those Matco's and Snap-On's. A friend of ours that helped us restore a 1947 pickup, (well, actually, did most of the work for us), had tons of Snap-On's in huge tool chests, in a detached garage/shop that another friend helped build for him, and used to love...

Thought I'd checkout a few different brands of torx bit sockets; ordered them last night around 5:30 our time, and received delivery this morning by 11 !:-0 • Sunex Impact T55 (Chr-Mo alloy steel; fits steering knuckle star-drive-head pinch bolt nicely) • Sunex Impact T60 (Chr-Mo alloy steel) •...

Not nearly as senior of a moment as me forgetting my billfold. ;) :dunno: I'm considering asking if I could have the title of this thread changed to: ~ The Front Strut Removal & Installation Comedy ~ . . or perhaps, Tragedy ~. :spit:

Frozen bottom of front struts on a rust-belt vehicle; how to free?

You must've not read my entire post abv ^ :p Mm-hmm. I was on way to auto store & HD, by way of hole-in-wall, but upon the perturbing revelation that I'd plumb forgot my foldin' monies; motored home forthwith and ordered from Brazilian River, per my last post. ;)

Changed into work clothes, drove to a little discount hole-in-the-wall place that sells bought-at-auction tools; some Dewalt, some Milwaukee (spanish M12's w/o chargers), sometimes Craftsman, sometimes Kobalt, Vermont, but mostly cheap foreign Cal-Hawk; IIT (Illinois Industrial Tools?); Great...

Speaking of vintage 1/2" ratchets...Here's a mystery ratchet w/no markings

So, it's a highly unsought after and extremely uncollectable TRH ! But at least it has a name now. Thanks for the info. ;)

Best Ratcheting Screwdriver? New to the forum

I've been enjoying the GearWrench 8939 set - that comes with 10", 6" & 3" extensions. Was NOS and approx 1/2 price, so worth trying I figured. Nothing fancy, but it works. Also picked-up the GearWrench 2 Position Ratcheting - 82788 - w/built-in light, thanks to KnurledNut's suggestion. The...

Speaking of vintage 1/2" ratchets...Here's a mystery ratchet w/no markings

It hasn't been used for 20+ years; I could barely turn the directional knob. He did have a few old combo wrenches that are marked as forged in USA, but even they have no names. So he must've liked collecting no-name tools. Thanks for the opinions.

Re: Speaking of vintage 1/2" ratchets...Here's a mystery ratchet w/no markings Thanks, The FIL wasn't a buyer of quality tools, so a knock off sounds about right. ;)
