    I received mine today. It's pretty handy, I like the magnet base to keep it nearby. The lip is very shallow which really limits its usefulness to me. If the lip were closer to 1/2" it would feel a lot more stable in the cut.

    I'm a fan of the arborist-style climbing systems. You use a friction hitch (prussik knot) to advance up and down a static line so there is no slack as long as you tend the hitch. For an anchor point I've used my Jeep with the battery unhooked. I can see how the lines might get in your way...

    I think there's also a temperature protection circuit that shuts down the heating element above a certain reading. So even if you defeat the timer you still might not be able to run the thing constantly.

    Route a slot in the length of PVC pipe

    If you're only making a 7" long slot I would just clamp the pipe and use a hacksaw with a file to smooth it up. It would take you three times as long to devise a jig for a circular saw or router.
