    Manual transfer switch planning

Yes, this is the plan. Every few years we have a few day outage. Since we're the only guys on the end of our line we are the last to get restored. For this scenario we have no problem manually shutting off all the breakers, cutting over to the generator, then turning on a marked subset of them...

    Manual transfer switch planning

Working on it, ran out of daylight yesterday, left for work before daylight today. Each of the boxes fed by the meter has a breaker inside that says 150A on it. The panels inside the house do not have their own disconnect breaker. Each of the 150A breakers is fed with its own set of three 1/0...

    Manual transfer switch planning

Thanks to all for their suggestions and feedback. It's much appreciated and exactly why I posted, GJ rules! Of course, it won't feel right until someone calls me an idiot and tells me I'm going to burn down my house! :) -- Carl

    Manual transfer switch planning

So the output of the transfer switch goes into the junction box then the distribution block fans it out to feed the three services. Do I have that right? -- Carl

    Manual transfer switch planning

Hadn't even thought of that. It's 36" from the wall to the post. If it needs to be 36" from the front of the panel the post needs to move. -- Carl

    Manual transfer switch planning

Picture of meter posted in reply to previous post. I'm not married to the drawing, but I didn't want to rework the whole wall unless I had to. Sounds like regardless of what I do with a transfer switch, feeding three services from one source is going to need more wall space. -- Carl

    Manual transfer switch planning

I was thinking it had to be more than 200A because there were two 150A breakers hanging off of it. The current setup was put in place in 1982. I can't see any markings on the meter base, but I've attached pictures of the transformer, meter, and wiring between meter and 150A panels. -- Carl

    Manual transfer switch planning

Hi Guys, Need some help planning electrical changes. This job will be permitted and done by a licensed electrician, but I need to tell him what I want, and that's where I could use some feedback. We've currently got a 400A meter base that feeds a pair of 150A breakers that run to panels inside...

The county will let me build 1200sq but...

Go down to planning and zoning and have a friendly discussion with them about what you would like to do. In general they want the additional tax revenue that comes from increased property value. They have to balance that against keeping property usage more or less in line with zoning and keeping...

The county will let me build 1200sq but...

During my experience with planning and zoning they told me that people who want an incremental increase, say 20%, have a good chance of being approved, but people who are going much larger have a much more difficult case. You can ask for whatever you want, here we have to pay $750 to try for a...

    Pre-drying Compressor Intake Air

I like the idea of using an AC unit and moisture, but a little differently: take the unit apart and run the compressed air through the condenser coil submerged in a bucket of water! :) -- Carl

How to stop car in garage?

I should have provided more context: this is a garage for my parents. I'm fortunate enough to still have them around and get to see them every day, I treasure that. They both still drive, but the day will come when they need to hang up the keys. This is preventative planning to limit damage if...

How to stop car in garage?

I've got a garage with a level (no "step up" in front of parking) layout. I'm concerned about a "gas instead of brake" incident somewhere down the road when a vehicle is coming in to park. What's a good way to stop the car and limit damage to the garage? Thanks! -- Carl

Can I embed a ramp in my garage slab?

I appreciate the quick feedback, guys! I'm glad to hear there are a few options and that it is straightforward. I know what I want but have no frame of reference when talking to a concrete guy, this gives me something to work with. Thanks for sharing your experience and suggestions. I'm in...

Can I embed a ramp in my garage slab?

I've been lurking on this forum for a while collecting ideas. Now I have a chance to build something and need some advice on whether I can do what I have in mind, picture below. We're adding a garage (metal building) and one of the goals is to make access friendly to walkers and wheelchairs. My...
