You could go to an arts/craft store and purchase frisket paper. That may work. It is what airbrush artists use.

I don't have a picture at the moment, but I used a light colored stain/poly combo on the cabinet frames (oak maybe??) and then painted the doors a nice satin red color (tried to match somewhere in between the craftsman and HF toolbox). I think it looks nice and like the contrast.
