    Drilling holes into lift post

^^^ What he said. That's the only issue you face. I added brackets on the posts of my old Bendpak 4 post lift to hang the casters.

    Heating /ac options

A 2 zone 2 ton mini split would work wonders. You get ac and heat in one package. It can be installed by you, risking any warranty, or by a dealer. I went with a Daikin 4 ton 2 zone in my 40x50. No regrets except the dealer's installers left something to desire but that's another story.

Mini split wire size - prewire thoughts

I run two 24k units off the 36k inverter. The inverter is fed with 10/2. It's a Daikin unit and more than enough amperage capacity.

    leave extra conductors in panel?

The inspector doesn't care how many wires are in the panel. He is looking for compliance. My inspector only looked at the grounds, service cable sizing and general installation. He never looked at a single outlet or box in the shop. It was barely full when it was signed off. I'd just hold off...

    Covering up a ground rod

In Va you're required to have 2 ground rods 6' apart. I personally like access so I'd consider putting a piece of pvc around that rod prior to concrete. If you have any doubts contact your service provider. They can clear it up for you.

Best practice for wiring lights - 1 or multiple circuits

I have only one breaker for my interior lighting. It feeds four switches for zoning. There is separate ambient lighting in the overhead and bathroom. I ran dimmer wiring for the high bays but decided I liked the level of lighting so didn't install dimmers. The low bay is the same situation so I...

    Sanity check on 240v outlet...

I installed dedicated 50amp and 30 amp outlets to feed my mill, lathe, band saw, welders, lift and compressor. Nothing is hardwired but every plug and cable is sized appropriately.

Need a Panel Suggestion between Serivice and main panel for solar

I'm assuming you're part of a co-op? If so, have you asked them for assistance? I pay about $20@month for my meter regardless of solar or not. I've got three meters on the farm which I pay $20@month each but only one is a net meter. Anyhow, besides the offset to my electrical bill I'm also...

Finally got lighting completed in my 40x50

Yes, the doors do go above the lights. It took a bit of time to figure out how to achieve that and still clear the 166" height of the 2 post lift.

Looking for advice on buying a welder.

Flux core is good in windy conditions but you already have that covered with a stick welder. 110v simply doesn't have the heart for continuous or heavy welding. 220v is the only real option. Gas is a no-brainer as it allows different shielding for different metals. Too big an amperage for your...

Need a Panel Suggestion between Serivice and main panel for solar

I have a generator and solar arrays. There may be work arounds but my solar is tied to the main grid through a net meter. The generator is fed through a ATS to a dedicated breaker panel which dictates which circuits get back up power. When the generator is running the show the solar arrays and...

Best practice for wiring lights - 1 or multiple circuits

I like zones. It's energy efficient if you only need lighting in a certain area vs illuminating the whole garage. This comes into play on cloudly days and dusk/dawn. At night I'm lit up like a football stadium. The extra effort and cost is justified to me.

Finally got lighting completed in my 40x50

It's been a long time coming. It took over a year to get completed for lighting in my 40'x50' shop. There are basically 3 bays. The outer are low bay while the inner is high bay. I'm using 8 TCPI 105w 5000k fixtures down the middle. There are 2 zones, front and back, with 4 lights each. These...

    Daytona car dollies

I purchased a set of 4 this weekend to move my 240Z and a rock crawler project around the shop. There were no sales and I didn't have a coupon either, dang it. They almost got me with the 10% for a credit card but I didn't see it worth only $50. But I digress. The ad says these only accept up...

    Metal Lathe. Looking for advice.

My advice is to be aware and careful when you finally get something going. A lathe is probably the most dangerous machine in a shop. You're throwing the material into a fixed tool. Things can and have gone horribly wrong in a fraction of a second. The bigger the machine the more dangerous too. I...

25ft extension cord to power 19amps?

Even if the blower pulls 19 amps, which I highly question, that should only be a start up. You could borrow an clamp-on ammeter to confirm the actual draw. Just use the 12/3 extension cord. It will suffice easily for 25 feet.

Which size C-clamp for disc brakes?

F-clamps work fine as long as you're not juggling the clamp and the part your trying to clamp. I use these often in welding projects.

    Car lift hydraulic additive

Service the power unit first. Clear the sediment screen under the release handle. Replace the hydraulic fluid if it is cloudy or dark. That may fix the noise. Are you sure its from the cylinders and not the rubbing blocks in the uprights?

    well tank life and sizing

My home (160 year old farmhouse) has only one bathroom plus the kitchen and laundry room. There are 3 spigots located in the yard too. I replaced two vertical 20 gallon tanks with two horizontal 20 gallon tanks. One of the original tanks had a complete bladder failure and the other had a pin...
