    Lift buying

I had always planned on buying a lift one day. Looking around this site, I see lots of 4 post lifts, and lots of 2 posts. Why is the 4 post so popular? It seems like you can remove wheels more easily and do more work. Plus the 2 post takes up less floor real estate. Is the benefit of the four...

    Who's got lathes?

It depends. There are a lot of variables when it comes to machine tools. An older machine can be worn in such a way that it's tough to get an accurate cut, even for an experienced operator. You'll get chatter and inaccurate cuts. I know you think what you're making is simple and doesnt require...

    Who's got lathes?

Yes, they're very different. For one thing, that ones a smaller model. It's also plain bearing head rather than ball bearing like mine. Mine appears to be beefier in general as well. I'd guess that one is an earlier smaller version of mine.

    Who's got lathes?

I don't remember. I looked it up one time and found out but I don't remember what it was. I want to say it was a 40's. Here's what it looked like before I tore it down and painted it:

    Who's got lathes?

I have an Atlas 12x40. Like it a lot. Got it and some tooling for $100. On the lookout for a mill.

    Where to hang the reel?

Mine is dead in the middle of my 24x24 10' ceiling. It's a large one I got at tractor supply. It has a movable rubber bumper on it so you can adjust how much hose hangs out of the reel when it's retracted. I have it in the center so my 50' hose can go anywhere in the shop and reach the whole way...

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT 1950s Craftsman Garage retro remodel

Thanks. I just hope I end up getting to use it. It's a little large and venting is going to be problematic. When I get out to the garage later, I'll snap some pics of some of my old tools, I have a few things that are right up your alley. A late 40's Atlas 12x40 metal lathe, a Large Walker...

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT 1950s Craftsman Garage retro remodel

Wow. Awesome garage! If you lived closer, I'd have an awesome heater that would look perfect hanging in there! Late 50s Modine.

    Woodburning stove in a garage...

I thought about a wood stove, but I decided against it. My thinking is, if I'm not in there every day, when I do go out to the garage to work, I have to build a fire and wait for it to heat up until its comfortable. Plus I have to cut split and store wood. And I don't have the fine temp control...

    Old Modine ceiling mounted heater

I've been scouring Craigslist for weeks looking for a used heater for my garage. I wanted something newer, but got in a hurry and got that one for $200. (Its getting cold here and i run straight water with no anti-freeze in 2 of my bikes.) It was in a barn WAY out in the boonies. It's in...

    Old Modine ceiling mounted heater

Got another email from Modine (Emerson Swan). Apparently my old Modine is causing quite a stir over there. The sales guy I talked to sent pictures of my unit to some old timers that work there. They say it's from the late 50's. They said if I'm not able to use it, they want me to remove the...

    Old Modine ceiling mounted heater

So I called Modine today, and they referred me to an outfit called Emerson Swan who handles all the Modine questions now apparently. This guy tells me my unit is from the early 60's and it's gravity vented. It can't be horizontially vented, they say. So I'm kind of stuck now. Here's the issue...

    Old Modine ceiling mounted heater

Terrific, something else to worry about! Lol. Ok, I'll pull it apart tonight and have a look. How do you fix said cracks? Silver solder? Brazing?

    Old Modine ceiling mounted heater

I have the model number, but they don't have the installation instructions posted anywhere. I guess it's too old. All the instructions Modine has on their site for their current models says its ok to vent out the side as long as the vent slopes 1/4" per foot. I hate to hire an HVAC contractor to...

How do I find the person in charge?

With all due respect, the confusion is totally your fault. You saw an item that said no free shipping. You tried to get free shipping anyhow. There wasn't confusion until you created it. Was the item price clearly marked? Was the shipping restrictions marked? As for finding the higher ups...

How do I find the person in charge?

I know from experience that the online market is cut throat. The discounts given leave very little profit. Giving someone $80 worth of free shipping on an item that doesn't qualify for it means the merchant is losing money to sell you your item. I have a site where I offer free shipping on...

    "Loft" Over Garage Door

Awesome! Thanks. I've been looking for a way to get an overhead hoist of some sort in my garage. This is just the ticket! Plus, I can get a safety harness and play Batman!

    "Loft" Over Garage Door

That is effing brilliant. I'm stealing that idea. Like tomorrow. Where did you get the track and hoist? Anything special?

    VCT Installation - VIDEO

Do you by any chance have motorcycles? I like the look of the floor but it's the motorcycles that worry me. I have 4-6 parked in my garage at anytime. I'd like to know how those tiles hold up it kickstands.
