    Driveway ice mitigation

30 years ago we had a very early snowfall that set records that stand till this day. The heavy wet snow accumulated on road surfaces and it got packed down into rock hard ice. This ice was several inches thick and it would NOT go away for months. ALL of our streets in the entire metro area...

    Stand by generator upgrade

It seems like you have plenty of back-up (generator) electricity when you're not trying to run the 10KW built-in heater...... Buy some 120 volt space heaters and put them in the rooms that you spend the most time in. If the power goes out during the really cold months, run your HP like normal...

Why do Scotchlocks have such a bad reputation?

Scotchlocks are the root of all evil. All of the worlds problems can be traced back to failed Scotchlocks if you dig deep enough. lol. On a serious note: I know of a large truck up-fitter company that will fire anyone (guys who build trucks in their shop) if they are caught in possession of...

    Question for NEC "Code Lawyers"

Why? Since when are old homes required to met current NEC codes if you're not making major changes to the house? If you're simply adding a circuit, (for example) you're not required to update the entire electrical system in the house. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a licensed electrician, but I...

    Scan tool shopping?

Yep, that's why I replied with the information about the 12+8 cable. He can buy one Autel scan tool (for example) and have full access to both of his vehicles with the addition of a $25 dollar 12+8 cable..... and not have to worry about internet (cloud) connections, scan tool subscriptions, or...

    Scan tool shopping?

I understand all that.... That's why I mentioned it in the second sentence of my initial reply.... "Your lucky if you can check trouble codes without the correct equipment" The "bypass module" is the 12+8 cable that I also, already mentioned in my initial reply. Thanks

    Question for NEC "Code Lawyers"

I recommend adding as many circuits as you can to the kitchen. Even if the code doesn't require it, you can still add more... I just added 2, 20amp each (40 amps total) receptacles to my kitchen about 6 months ago. Man is that nice having enough power to run whatever I want. My old house had...

    Scan tool shopping?

Not on 2018 and newer FCA vehicles with a secure gateway module. Your lucky if you can check trouble codes without the correct equipment. If you want the scan tool to work on 2018 and newer FCA vehicles the scan tool DOES indeed need to have a current subscription AND a current AutoAuth...

It would work- but is it permitted by code?

Yeah, not every electrical inspector is an *******. This particular city inspector was also one of the electrical instructors at the local tech college for 18 years. He enjoys explaining things to people who ask questions.

It would work- but is it permitted by code?

My local city electrical inspector told me that he actually enjoys it when home owners call and ask for advice. He said that is part of his job.... He also said it's a different story for electrical contractors, they are supposed to already know the answers.

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

I'm not sure that is accurate. I'm not a forklift guy so I could be wrong.... But this is how I see it.... The ballast resistor cuts the voltage to the ignition system (specifically, the coil) down below 12 volts while the engine is running. (typically around 9 volts) However, most vehicles...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

Sand (or file) the mating surface of the points and then make sure the air gap is within spec. Electrical arcing and corrosion build-up on the surface of the points can cause them to not actually make electric contact (even though they look like they are touching) which will give you a "no...

    General Snow Blower Questions

Yeah, a BRAND NEW one is 10K...... I'd be looking for something used. Even if it's a standard 3 point reverse blower.

    General Snow Blower Questions

Get a 3 point pto blower. I know you said some people have told you it wouldn't work very well..... Compared to what? Using a walk behind blower *****! Especially on a 325' driveway! I'd much rather have a 3 point blower mounted on a decent sized tractor than manhandle a walk behind blower...

power on indicator for panel main

The alarm is loud and annoying. If you weren't expecting it.... it would probably make a person "jump" when it turns on.

power on indicator for panel main

I have this installed at my main panel. It's perfect. It does exactly what I want it to do. I do not store the batteries in it while not in use.... Alkaline batteries are notorious for leaking acid into whatever device they're installed in.
