Model 25 is part of the series of 19 - 26. 23 - 26 did not have the cast steel anvil on the back. In 1876 the catalog only went to 24. In 1883 it went to 26. Here is an 1883 catalog page of it. The 25X version did not show up until 1900 according to the catalog pages I have. Cool !

When I see vises of this design, I always look for the Bison Bial metal label that is typically riveted low on the left side of the fixed tower. Otherwise they can be Chinese knock offs. Here is a photo of the metal label I am referring to.

Normally you close the vise tight and measure the protrusion of the rail out the back. With vises with horns out the back it is hard to find out where to start back there. This vise has vertical piece supporting the rail (all the way around) just inside where the bottom of the rail meets the...

It is more like 50 being the 5" stationary and the 150 being the 5" swivel. It was distributed by Babco in Oakland California and may have been made by them originally. So not metric. I thought the same thing when I bought it. More like Morgan part numbers.

This isn't on the spreadsheet. This is a Babco 150, made in Japan. Swivel base. Jaws are 5 inches wide. It opens 5 inches (in the proper method of measuring). The anvil area is 3-1/8 x 4-1/8 inches. It weighs 52 lbs. Replaceable jaws. There is space for clip on pipe jaws but none were...

FPU - long Polish name...Fabryka Przyrzadow Uchwytow. Bison-Bial is the maker. The gib bolts look original. Nice. Some people screw in the front gib bolt in to far and causes the sliding body to crack around that bolt so be careful with that. I have a 5 inch one. Nice !

Looks like a Record Quick Release. Perhaps a 22, 23 or 24 depending a jaw width. I don't like the big vertical mark on the rail under the jaw. A weld maybe? Here is a 1963 catalog of the series I am thinking of....

Dannyr - The Simpson quick release was owned by Athol Machine Co of Athol Mass., USA. Here is a 1911 catalog page from Athol Machine Co of that design. Starrett originally worked at Athol and in 1905 came back and bought Athol but kept its brand separate to Starrett for many years after...

Made by Oswego Tool Company, judging by the "T" inside the "O" symbol. I have a No 1 version but no "Oil Well Supply Co" marked on it.

The Columbian combo vise family originally started out with a post threw the base swivel design (with a big wing nut under the bench to lock it in position. This changed to the swivel you have in the late 1920s. Later in 1930s the pipe jaws appear to have been changed so that they did not...

I went looking for a brochure page in the vise spreadsheet and did find it there. Brochure shown is from 1960 (according to my info) but no date is indicated for it. 023 is 3" jaws, 3" opening, 14 lbs, pipe jaws for 1/8 to 1" diameter pipe. The 1964 catalog does not have the circular marking...

I think the "N" has been knocked off the casting. We have seen many errors on older vises regarding names, location marking being wrong etc. This is a Columbian swivel jaw, swivel base 404-1/2. The base looks to have been welded to the swivel on this side.

Mr Wonderful, I have a Reed catalogs from 1931 and about 1940. Nothing of the 1C-4C in 1931. The 1940 shows the 1C-4C with the 31-34 post thru combo vise also listed, so you a pretty close to the beginning of the 1C-4C design period. Sorry and don't have any catalogs in between.

I think it has the looks of a Fortis vise (also from England). I am too far away. I see it on Facebook now. Good luck. Loose main screw is a spring (might still be inside) and a split pin to hold it back in place.
