Adjustable wrench vs Plier wrench (i.e. Knipex)

I have a few adjustable wrenches that never get used and one Knipex pliers wrench that also never gets used. I’m a Knipex fan and got fooled by the “contraptionism“ of the pliers wrench, thinking I’d use it. It’s just another adjustable wrench in my book. I’ll keep buying Knipex, but not...

All Those Unused Tools - A Frugal Boomer's Perspective

First off, I just like tools. I like being self sufficient particularly out in the shop or whenever I’m working on a home improvement/repair project. Some tools get used a lot, some occasionally and some rarely to never. In terms of wrenches, sockets, and those types of tools, what I’ve found...

4 Point Sockets, Lifesaver for pipe plugs

I can’t say that I’m a frequent user of four point sockets, but I can’t resist them either. The set in the case is Walden set #21 and the set in the foreground is Hinsdale, circle H vintage. Jim C.

    Knipex - where to start

If I could only have one Knipex tool, I’d keep the mini bolt cutter. I seem to use that one the most. Jim C.

The Russian nesting doll of screwdrivers

My dad gave me this nesting screwdriver when I was about ten years old. I used it exclusively to connect all the wires to various switch terminals and accessories on my HO model railroad. Jim C.

    Sears Craftsman Display walls

I very clearly remember them.………Macomb Mall Sears, just north of Detroit. You’d see the sets in the Sears catalog and then could go to the store and see each set of tools, side by side, mounted on boards under clear, custom contoured/molded, plastic covers. The largest set was always included...

Tools you always had but never used

I hate these! Yes, the adjustable wrench. I must have at least a dozen of them in different sizes, and made by various manufacturers. I have no idea where they all came from over the last several decades, but I have them and NEVER use any of them for any reason whatsoever. I might use one if...

Vintage, unopened Craftsman Tool Set.. Opinions on age?

Based on what I can see in the photos and what has been described by the OP, I know that ratchets with those particular model numbers and oil ports were produced between 1970 and 1978. They may be a clue to the approximate age of your tool set. Jim C.

In Defense of the Radial Arm Saw

That’s what I’m saying. Even though you use your RAS a lot, you shouldn’t have to readjust it or even check it every few months to make sure it’s in alignment. I have a 2000 Delta Unisaw that‘s been “set it and forget it” for twenty two years and a 1994 Craftsman sliding compound miter saw...

In Defense of the Radial Arm Saw

Earlier this year I got a 1958 Craftsman 10” RAS for free. The price was right so I figured why not give it a try. I‘ve been an active woodworker since junior high school but had almost zero experience with a RAS since last using one in high school shop class…….40+ years ago. Anyway, after I...

    Show your “Crowntop” Craftsman

A couple weeks ago, I went to my parents house in an effort to help them start downsizing. As we were going through the garage, I came across a few small Craftsman gems that my dad bought in the 1960s. According to my dad, back in the day, the local Sears department store had a “Monday Only...

    Don’s Den of Dandy Delights

Hey Don, I like that tool box! My grandfather was a tool maker at Ford Motor and later at Timken Gear and Axle. Along with dozens of taps, assorted drill bits, and lathe cutting bits (not pictured), the items in the photo below comprised most of the tools he had in his box during his career...

    Anyone else like Channellocks?

In response to buildyourown above, I’m still a firmly committed Channellock user, but I do use Knipex as well. I guess it depends on what I’m doing. For general purpose stuff, it’s typically Channellock. I have a wider variety of Channellocks. For thicker cutting jobs, I usually go with...
