    The VISES of Garage Journal

Don’t put yourself in harm’s way. Injured bodies are far worse than broken vises.

    How tall is your workbench

I’m just 5’8 and I like my 38 inch high bench. I originally built it to 36 inches but added an extra thick top a few years ago and it is comfortable for me.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I wouldn’t use BLO on the slide or screw. BLO hardens into a sticky varnish like substance that will not play well with close tolerances. I don’t have outdoor vises but my guess would be that Fluid Film would be better. Outlaw is right about coating the outside with BLO. IMHO, it’s better than...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Looks to me like a Yost. Many were made in the USA but like many manufacturers, they moved most or all of their production overseas. I think 5 or so years ago was the big move. If you paid like maybe $50 for it you should be able to get your money back if you don’t like it. Keep your...

Tools to use instead of a knife

It is possible to dig through a concrete wall with a modified spoon. It just takes time. 😎

Tools to use instead of a knife

Don’t use the tip of a $100+ knife to open a paint can. On second thought, don’t use ANY knife to open a paint can. If and when the tip breaks off it might fly through the air and hit you or somebody else in the face. If you don’t have one of those tools that paint stores give away, use that...

Need advise for neutralizing rust on a steel toolbox.

Rust never sleeps. You could brush on a light coat of boiled linseed oil thinned down with mineral spirits. That would be a minimalistic approach. That would seal out moisture and oxygen but would be easily removable in the future.

    People posting AI output verbatim?

Then I asked AI to rate this forum. Garage Journal is widely considered a top, comprehensive resource for garage enthusiasts, offering vast information, tool reviews, and inspiring DIY build threads, but its strong community can sometimes lean towards specific views, leading some users to find...

    People posting AI output verbatim?

I asked it why I should trust its answers. Here is what it said. You should not blindly trust AI answers; instead, treat them as a starting point, verifying critical information with reliable human-vetted sources because AI can generate plausible-sounding but false information...
