    Anvil identification

Certainly looks old, and in great shape (all things considered). Possibly an import? If it were US made by one of the big makers like Hay-Budden, Columbus Forge & Iron Co. (Trenton anvils), or Columbus Anvil & Forging Co. (Arm & Hammer anvils), it would normally have other markings on it...

The J100 Keychain Screwdrivers Research Project

Picked this one up recently. Right below where it says "Proto Tool Division" , the words "Ingersoll-Rand Company" have been blacked out (redacted). So possibly this dates to around the time that Ingersoll-Rand (and their Proto tool brand) were sold to Stanley. The J100 taped to the card is a...

Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Although I also posted this to the “Poll on how to prounce PLOMB” thread, the information is too good not to share a link to it here as well (since not everyone reads that thread): https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/poll-on-how-to-prounce-plomb.172544/post-9471227 According to the...

Poll on how to prounce PLOMB

In my mind (at least), I think this matter is settled. I am a member of the “Plomb Tools Enthusiasts and Collectors” group on Facebook and one of our members is Pete Plomb. Pete is the great grandson of Jules Plomb, and Jules Plomb was the brother of Alphonse Plomb. Someone asked Pete how...

The J100 Keychain Screwdrivers Research Project

Thanks! What kills me is that tiny hammer. Either that or you have just found the world's largest J100! ;)

Anyone picked up any J100s (either recently or in the past) that you would be willing to share pics of?

Poll on how to prounce PLOMB

I think Oldtuleguy could settle this once and for all since his father was a tool designer from Plomb in the mid 1940s. Surely he head his Dad say the name the way that it was pronounced at the company. I will reach out to him to see if he can shed some light.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Last week I posted about finding a Reed 204A vise in excellent condition. Used but not abused. Only one thing bothered me about the vise was that at some point, one of the original ends on the swivel lock had come off and someone had made an ill-fitting attempt at a replacement. Granted, it...

Hand tool restoration challenge contest (Read post #1 for the rules)

Thank you! I gotta admit, though, that there was a moment after a couple days of repeatedly oiling that thumb nut and screw without getting it to move that I began to have some serious doubts that I would be able to pull this off. I could picture the “inaugural tool restoration challenge” as...

Hand tool restoration challenge contest (Read post #1 for the rules)

I think we successfully brought this one back from the dead. What do you think? Restoration time: 4 days (1/14/2022 to 1/17/2022) Evaporust baths were done in a plastic container in the basement utility room. Evaporust temp was room temperature (approx 68 degrees F).

Hand tool restoration challenge contest (Read post #1 for the rules)

The bevel is back together now. I did a light little light sanding on the blade to take off the peaks of the roughness and aloe the blade to slide smoothly. I could have kept going until all of the pitts were sanded out, but I would have lost a considerable amount of blade thickness in the...

Here is the blade out of the Evaporust. Rust free, but badly pitted as I suspected.

The screw and nut are out of the Evaporust with excellent results. The blade is still “cooking”.

Hand tool restoration challenge contest (Read post #1 for the rules)

Working on this handle of this tool has reminded me of the incredible beauty of Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra). In 1992 the CITES (Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Speices) treaty declared Brazilian rosewood an endangered species and prohibited its import or export...

Here is my best guess at a similar example of what this t-bevel would have looked like. This one is from an old eBay sale. At least on this example, there was a name stamped into the wood on the thumb nut side of the handle. On the piece that I am working on, that happens to be the side where...

Hand tool restoration challenge contest (Read post #1 for the rules)

While the ferrous metal parts are doing their thing in the "Evaporust Spa", I started working on the rosewood (pretty sure it's Brazilian rosewood) and brass handle. Someone had taken a file or rasp to one side ‘of it at some point and removed some wood, leaving deep gouges. I don’t know yet...

Hand tool restoration challenge contest (Read post #1 for the rules)

After 2 1/2 days of penetrating oil drops and hammer taps, I am officially declaring victory over the rust-fused screw and nut. At first there was just an almost imperceptible amount of movement. More oil. More hammer taps. Tap, oil, let it sit. Then repeat. Again and again. Finally the...
