    Botched concrete job

Short version: Is there any reason to not use a self leveling concrete to fix a terrible finish job on a house, garage and shop concrete floor? Is it strong enough and abrasion resistant enough for a shop? Nice enough for my living room floor (no floor coverings, just bare concrete)...

Pictures and comments on your HD-40 floor?

I've been searching for photos and reviews of HD-40 on concrete. I'm a week away from pouring a 40x84 slab for my house, shop and garage - and trying to get info on flooring has been a pain. I'd love to hear your stories (how was it to install? did it cover as well as advertised?...) and see...

    Conduit size for 400' run

I need to run 220 and ethernet to my well (the IP camera and gate are near the well), about 400' - plus water back to the house and the feed from the pole. I know I can save a few bucks and direct bury the ethernet, but running conduit will allow me to more easily upgrade or replace it later...

    THHN stranded vs solid

Is there any reason to spend a small extra amount and get stranded wire if I'm running conduit? The cost, overall, is insignificant.

    EZFloor/RAZ Panel - insulation & PEX routing?

I'm getting closer to pouring a 3,400 sq ft slab for a house/shop and nobody locally can deal with radiant heat, so I'm doing that part myself. Most of the PEX vendors want to sell me zip ties or staples for attaching the PEX. One guy quoted me one of the floors that looks like Legos that the...

Greg Smith/Atlas lift - no diesel trucks on 9k lift?

I'm about to lay the Pex and pour the slab, so I have to choose the lift soon. I called Greg Smith to ask the differences between two very similar 9k lifts, and was told by the guy on the phone, "you can't lift a dually or diesel on our 9k lifts". Since there wasn't a giant flashing warning to...

    foam thickness under heated slab

I'm pouring a slab with PEX for radiant heat, and have been assuming I'll use 2" XPS and a vapor barrier under the slab (and along the edges of course). I am very well aware that "more insulation is better" but am curious if anybody has any calculations on how insulation relates to heating...

Leaving an unheated area in a radiant floor

I'm putting Pex in the slab of the house and shop, but there's a few areas where it would make more sense to not heat the floor. 1) Under the freezer in the garage - this is a pretty small space, and probably not worth the hassle. 2) In the kitchen pantry. Cool and dark is the way to go for a...

    My radiant floor heat bid

I just got a bid to install pex in my house, garage, shop and woodshop. I'm curious how this compares to work that other have had done. The following is a quote from the bid - in short, it includes 3,600 feet of pex (for 3,400 sq ft of slab), an electric boiler, all plumbing, low voltage...

    Polyurea on a new slab

I'm considering polyurea on a new floor for my woodshop, garage and shop (3 different spaces). Woodshop - 480 ft Garage - 720 ft Shop - 1,280 fy I'm looking at SPGX, the kit from GarageFlooring and whatever else is recommended here. My two biggest concerns are about gloss and welding. 1) Can...

T8 LED - single or double ended?

I'm figuring out the lighting for my shop space, and will be installing mountain of new LED ready 4' fixtures and T8 LEDs. I've seen single and double ended fixtures and bulbs. I haven't seen much discussion of which style, or why? Is there any info on which way might become the standard...

    calculating heat and cooling loads?

I am finally about ready to build, and haven't quite decided on how to heat the water for my hydronic (in slab) heating system. Both PV solar and outdoor wood boiler are tempting and have associated pluses and minuses. I'd like to get a ballpark estimate of what heating loads to expect, as that...

    Cargo container "foundation"

Thinking of putting in a 40' container, and possibly adding a second one with a roof (and storage space) between the two. The soil here is decomposed granite, with a bit of topsoil. It'll be placed on a leveled portion of a small slope, so there will be some water, but the drainage is pretty...

Shop power - conduit & boxes or flush outlets and Romex?

I'm trying to decide between surface mount (conduit and boxes) vs flush mounted boxes with Romex in the walls when I build my new shop. Flush mounted boxes and Romex seems cleaner, but surface mount & conduit would be so much easier to make changes to later. Any opinions?

Experience with PS103 or 104 from ConcreteSealersUSA?

Does anybody here have any experience with PS103 or PS104 from ConcreteSealersUSA? Any experience with the company at all? https://www.concretesealersusa.com/product-type/densifiers-hardeners Their prices are significantly lower than soome other vendors, and I'm wondering about the quality...

    New 4' T8 w/o a ballast?

I am getting ready to build my house & shop, and think I'll need 40-50 4' fixtures. My preference is for replaceable LED "bulbs" that fit a T8 socket. I'd rather not buy 50 fixtures, modify them and throw the ballasts in the landfill. Has anybody found a new 4' T8 fixture that has no ballast...

    Floor waxing?

I'm getting ready to pour a 72 x 40 slab. 52' is for the shop, and 20' is for the attached house. A 500 sq ft room (20x25) will be for a lift bay, and I'm thinking of some sort of coating that will help keep oil stains at bay. Another 500 sq ft will be for a wood shop, and I want nothing...

    Second story lift/crane?

Does anybody here use a lift of some sort to get stuff up to the second story? I'm building soon, and I'll have a second floor over half of my shop. I've been considering a lift platform that uses a small winch, so I can easily put stuff into second floor storage. I'd like to see your solutions.

Auto bay sizing, with a lift

I've searched, but haven't found the answers I'm looking for. Hopefully I didn't miss the thread. I'm designing a new shop space, and a portion of it will be 40' x 25'. I am planning to cut the space in half with a wall, so I have a 20' x 25' for auto work with a 2 post lift. I'm doing this for...

Small jib crane - where to place it?

I am about to get a small jib crane from a friend of mine, and am wondering where in the shop is a logical place to put it. It's not this exact model; it's a lighter duty version by the same manufacturer. It's rated for 250#, but he's fairly certain that the limiting factor is the track that...
