The Droobarn, my (small) slice of garage heaven

Folding bench for the garage Folding bench for the garage So this past weekend I did a little work in the attached garage, building a simple 2'x4' folding workbench. Used a design from the great Jack Olsen, scaled to fit the space. Went together easily, and is a very sturdy piece. I'll be...

It's funny how different cars appeal to different folks. I certainly can't really explain my fascination with RHD cars, but it's there for sure. I sold my last Bugeye a couple years ago -- it had a hot motor, disc brakes, and was otherwise very similar but LHD. Bought this one in worse condition...

The Droobarn, my (small) slice of garage heaven

Funny you mention this. When I got home from work today I decided to answer this very question. Didn't even have to use the wheel dollies I've got, just rolled the cars into place. It's certainly not the best layout, but the workbench (such as it is) and stairs to the loft are clear and I could...

The Droobarn, my (small) slice of garage heaven

It was like sitting a drug addict down in a room of his favorite vice and saying "see you in a week" -- I just accepted that I wasn't going to be able to resist. A month on and no regrets, though I'll be crankier once I have to start shoveling snow off my daily driver.

The small-shop danger The small-shop danger The one danger with a small shop is that, at some point, you'll have to face a decision -- an opportunity will arise that would exceed your space quotient. What you're supposed to do is make the decision to work within the space you have. So...

    Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT British Garage planned

Good to hear you're getting closer to starting. It'll be well worth the wait.

Thanks! It's worked out well for me -- while I'd love more space it's certainly enough for what I do. The nice thing with going smaller is that it meant going less expensive as well, so I could get it done much sooner.

The Droobarn, my (small) slice of garage heaven

Thanks! Not much progress made, though I've been doing a bunch of work on the MGB in there all summer. I'm really happy with the layout now, moving the ladder to the back where it is now made an enormous difference. It's a small space, but I think I've got the layout now to where it will be...

Attic stairs are moved! Attic stairs are moved! Got the stairs to the attic moved today. Called the shed company a couple days ago to get a quote on moving the stairs. Price was reasonable so I gave the go ahead. They had a crew up in my area today so we got it all done. It's a small thing...

Thanks. I figured it would eventually prove handy and adding it up there was easy while I was running everything else.

Garage Door sensor blinded by sunlight

I've been annoyed by this same thing for the last 7 years. Just went out and spent 5 minutes swapping the sensors side-to-side as suggested here. Worked!

My electrical layout How I set up my outlets, and why I wanted to take a moment to document how I laid out the electrical in my little barn as it may help someone else in their thinking of how to set up their space. For starters, I worked in the space for a couple months using just a single...

I'm up in Wasatch County. Thanks Brent. Glad I've inspired you a little to streamline. I've been at that process for a few years now and it's been a very positive experience. Getting so you own your stuff -- and not the other way around -- is a worthwhile venture.

Passed the electrical inspection today, so we're legal and correct. That's the last of the inspections so we're good to go. :rocker: I've mentioned this before, but I've had nothing but good, professional service from my local building folks. They've been adequately thorough to make sure...

We have light! We have light! We're not up to operating-room spec yet, but we do have light and power in the barn now. My electrician friend stopped by after work tonight and we got everything cleaned up and up to code. Just have to schedule an inspection and we should be fully functional...

Thanks, I'm very fond of that view -- it's one of the big reasons we bought this house.

Very well done. I'm shortly to start building my own bench, and yours is one of my big inspirations.

The Droobarn, my (small) slice of garage heaven

Did a bit of a stuff-shuffle after work today, taking advantage of the little 6'x8' plastic shed I've still got. Don't know if the shed is staying, but I wanted to see what taking the engine hoist and floor jack out of the barn would do for space. This stuff may wind up in the attached...

Me too! I'm likely to wind up with something along the lines of allinon72's bench, though without the extra work painting the tool box.

So I've been working out in the droobarn for the last couple of weeks, going through a long list of projects on the MGB. I'm starting to get a good feel for the features and limitations of my workspace. Overall I'm pleased with what I can do in there, though I have one barn project that needs to...
