    220V to garage advice/sanity check

FWIW, I decided to go with a subpanel in the garage and separate breakers for compressor, a 220v plug for welder, and a 110v 20amp plug. I appreciate all the good advice and many of comments made sense to me. I decided to move the air compressor to other side of garage which meant a longer run...

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

I appreciate all the suggestions and advice. I think I'll go with a subpanel in garage as suggested. I'll do as suggested above "a 60a 240 breaker on the main panel and ran 6/3 to a 60a subpanel in the garage". Cost is insignificant compared to air compressor and welder and it does seem to add...

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

Would I then wire the air compressor directly into that sub panel or have a breaker in the sub panel feeding a junction box for the compressor and another breaker in the sub panel feeding the 220V plug?

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

The welder is a Miller 211. Not a high power machine. I mostly do 16gage tube and sheet metal so will probably keep welder on 110V for most of what I do as it's easier to move around garage and car. Since I was adding 220V for the compressor, I wanted to add an outlet for the welder in case I...

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

Thanks for suggestion. I am confused however as not planning any 110V circuits - just the 220V so don't understand what the sub panel helps if only 220V? If I'm showing my ignorance, sorry - pls explain.

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

I don't know. I could not find any markings on panel except those on the lugs. some faded labels, disintegrated labels. As I mentioned, I've found breakers @ big box stores which work so just assumed the panel was somewhat "standard".

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

hmm, yeah I hadn't thought about that but will check that out. There is a controller for the swamp cooler next to the panel which I'm guessing was added on after house was built. I'll see if that goes there and how it's connected. Would want to fix whatever while in there.

    220V to garage advice/sanity check

I would like to add 220v to my garage for hard wiring a 5hp air compressor and plug for a 220v capable welder. I won’t need to run them at the same time. I turn off the 110v compressor now when welding to prevent popping a breaker. The distance is short from the panel to the location in...

    Air Compressor Thoughts

Thanks for info on your experience. I’m leaning towards either the QT-5 or EMax. I like the Quincy name/brand and can get it dropped @ house from Lowe’s at same price as other online stores. Emax comparable is a pressure lube pump, disc valves with an unloader for start and ~same price and...

    Air Compressor Thoughts

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. @vwpieces Good point - I believe both Quincy and IR require you buy their start up kit at about $200 to get more than a 1 year warranty. If I remember correctly Emax/Eaton are 5 year without that extra tax. I'll look at that in more detail...

HD to require tool activation before use

I don’t know anything about the specifics of what they are thinking of implementing but generally there is a direct relationship between how easy something like this is to defeat/hack and the complexity of the solution. That is, if something at point of sale has to communicate with some logic...

    IR air compressor

I looked at Champion, SB, EMax, Eaton - all comparable 5hp models, lower rpm motors & pumps, disc valves, some sort of unloader. best price I could find for Champion was $3500 at CompressorWorld. The SB was $2600 On CompressorWorld which is about the same as the Eaton with shipping. The...

    IR air compressor

Yeah, I went to look for EMAX next and though listed on Home Depot website they are all “unavailable”, ditto even on Amazon. They seem to be having some supply chain problems. I only found availability for the more expensive models.

    IR air compressor

I really liked the Polar/Eaton also but the shipping costs are so high it makes them really expensive - $775 to ship to Az. I'm kind of between popping for close to $2800 or just getting something for around $1000 and buying twice more if it fails.....

Agree - I hit the ignore button on him so hopefully won't see more of that. Appreciate your advice/opinions.

    Air Compressor Thoughts

I've read a ton of threads/debates on air compressors. A common theme seems to be that the low end Quincy and IR models aren't good value. I've seen some comments that Eaton, Champion may be better value + whatever favorite someone may have in their shop. I am garage hobby guy with a bunch of...

    IR air compressor

@Xcursion88 - I'm sorry, I should have been more clear I was asking @vanapplebomb for his opinion. That said, That wasn't my suggestion but I guess you are on fire about your opinion and want to be sure it's expressed. It is interesting however on the topic of how important reviews are and...

    IR air compressor

I agree. I’m an engineer and spent my life designing products shipped to the field. Long term reliability/design robustness is not the same thing as early life failures. Generally early life failures are a function of mfg quality control and long term reliability relates to cost of components...

    Qunicy QT-5 from Lowe’s

I’m thinking of getting the Quincy QT-5. Choices seem to be from NorthernTool, Aircompressors direct, or Lowe’s. I was thinking it might be easier to deal with Lowe’s but curious as to opinions or experiences. 2nd question - it appears the Lowe’s model has the mag starter but without the...
