    Extech Meters

Check out the new Agilent handheld DMM's as well. They are a better value than the Fluke products and have the cat safety ratings as well. The bottom of the line is the U1241 for around $100 all the way up to the U1253 which has an OLED display - very handy in direct sunlight or for viewing...

Old Products and What Happened to Them?

I was just looking around for some metal polish, specifically something I used in my younger years called "Brasso". It prompted me to remember some of the oldy but goody stuff we used to have that seems to have dissappeared from popular use today. Anybody still use Brasso or here's a better...

    Price of laminated beams

Since you live in Petrolia, ON I would question your choice of a 12:2 roof pitch. Snow loads need to be taken into consideration as well so I suggest you talk to a structural engineer. He might recommend a greater pitch such as a 12:4 or 12:5.

    HRV system; brand?

I just installed a Venmar AVS Constructo 1.5 for my 30 yr. old 1500 sq. ft. bungalow. I did the installation with the help of a buddy of mine who is an HVAC contractor and got me a good deal on it. http://www.venmar.ca/BrochureCanada.aspx I have the unit running on demand at this time and turn...

My shop in the East Texas snow

Ditto here in the Toronto area. Grass still showing through in open areas. I've only used the snow blower twice so far this winter - and even then just to clear out some small drifting. If this keeps up, going to be a dry spring (for a change).

    Garage Door Size

I have a 2006 F350 DRW crew with long bed (my wife affectionately refers to it as "Monster") and it is 22' bumper to bumber. Since the 2 car garage is only 20' x 22' with 7' doors, the truck gets parked in the shop only (60'x100' with 12'W doors).

    Garage Door Size

10' W x 8' H is my vote. This way you can get an F350 DRW in with room to clear the mirrors and hips, etc. and still be able to get around the sides.

    Tankless water heaters?

I hear your pain bud. There are still many on-line sellers who just don't want to deal with the hassle of filling out the export docs. for an international shipment. Three solutions: a) Tell them you refuse to deal with them until they do support shipments to Canadian customers. b) Have them...

Concrete: Garage floor doweled into foundation?

Around here house foundations are typically in excess of 4' below the surface and sitting on footers that are typically 6"-8" thick and 18"-24" wide (depending on soil type). A garage that is "attached" to a house must also have a perimeter foundation wall that is to a depth of at least 4'...

    Permit exempt agricultural building?

You live in Mexico or something?? Around these parts (Ontario) agriculture buildings are treated the same as any other building. You have to pull a wiring permit for any and all wiring whether it is done by the property owner or a licensed electrician. And don't try and plug anything in (or...

    Tankless water heaters?

I replaced my aging 60 gal. electric with a Bosch 2400 tankless unit (Natural Gas) a couple of years ago. My motivation was downsizing our water requirements - just the missus & I in the house now. I couldn't see the sense in keeping 60 gals. of water at temp. all the time when I am away...

    How much power?

I did it the other way around. 100A to the house, 200A to the shop (but I have natural gas to use for heat, hot water and stove. The only significant load in the house is an electric clothes dryer.

Garage Bathroom planning: how to run supply lines?

I have just finished roughing in a similar setup. My compressor room is where the water comes in and is beside the bathroom (8' x 8'). I will eventually have a sink, toilet, small shower and urinal in there. To make life easy, I just used a couple of 4 outlet copper manifolds (one for hot...

pex crossing concrete breaks and pex layouts

I have 3250' of Pex in 2000 sq. ft. of 5" cement floor with control cuts on a roughly 12' x 12' grid pattern. The floor has also got a couple of cracks in an area where i have about 20 passes of tubing going through. So far, no leaks. I'm thinking that the Pex has enough stretch to absorb...

    Longest free-span truss?

I used 60' clear span trusses for my shop. The manufacturer I got them from typically supply 80'ers for horse riding arenas.

Lifts, Complete Hydraulic good or bad

I have had the SL10000OH in use for about a year now. Lifts a GMC dually no problem. The metal work is Korean made (by Powerexx) and is of very impressive quality - thickness of steel and welds. One word of caution though, all of the electrical wiring (except the hydraulic unit) is also of...

Grasshopper's New Home - "The Hangar"

Not really sure about that. The panels are designed to be mounted in either a horizontal or vertical configuration. In this case, since it is such a long panel, just makes it easier to run the wiring directly into the side for all the wires coming down from the ceiling and it puts everything...

picts of your in-floor heat set ups.

Re: picts of your in floor heat set ups. Nate, Yes, I did all the work myself on this. You are right in that I did a ton of research on this - it was my first attempt at doing something like this and I really learned a lot. The little white boxes on the wall are the digital thermostats, one...

Grasshopper's New Home - "The Hangar"

Been awhile since I posted an update. Finally got the heating system fired up about a month ago before the slab cooled down too much. Nice and comfy inside now. The boiler is a Trinagle Tube Excellence which is a combo unit that heats both the floor as well as supplies domestic hot water...
