That Sienna had the same engine I suspect. Massive PITA to get to the head gaskets as with the Highlander :-( I have a bottle of Kseal (uses ceramic fibers) but I’m not using it unless we’re stuck. I’m sure we’re on the same wavelength with respect to sealants, but Subaru made it “official”...

Thanks Nick (@nicholam77 ) Yes, I've pretty much grown up either directly on, or beside the lake so I guess no surprise with all the sailing etc :) I've been shooting HLG, or LOG (both 10 bit formats) with the Mini4 Pro and also uploading in 10 bit (HDR) formats. I'm learning a lot about...

The irony of the 2GR-FE engine is that is a very durable drivetrain, but only if you maintain it. I think if I'd done a deep dive on it earlier, (it's ignored a bit as we don't drive it much) I would have been doing frequent coolant changes. The fact that these are all aluminum block/heads...

After a 700km road trip, the 2014 Highlander used about zero coolant, and there was nothing to observe in the pressure test. Hmmm. In any case, the rear diff, transfer case, and transmission were long overdue for a fluid change. Toyota calls these "lifetime fills", but I'm not a believer. As...

Bob, thanks for being one of the 400 :) My target is to hit 500, so at 414 we're inching closer. Dramatic difference there before and after on your PT! I've noticed of late that the Acura MDX and RDX OEM lights in particular are up high enough/bright enough so that in the LEAF, it's a literal...

Our 2nd EV is my daughter's car, so not something I drive regularly. After doing a designated driver pick up last week for my daughter and friends, I was surprised with how poor the night lighting was on the highway. Now this is the same car exactly as our 1st EV, which has excellent LED...

    Winter Window Moisture

Gerkin 4800 are double hung vinyl, sliders? If so, also likely double glazed. Unfortunately double hung sliders are about the worst for air sealing, and double glazing is not helping. So playing with humidity may not offer a lot of relief. Inner magnetic acrylic storms will work.

Yes, with a family of four, you definitely need storage for the seasonal stuff...and spring and fall bring different challenges. You're right though in that there's essentially four seasons to sort. It's a bit frustrating for biking/skiing though in the shoulder months when you're dealing with...

No, because I have 3 pairs of winter boots as well, and 5 if you count the ski boots for downhill and cross country skiing :-( We don't have hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides or much for tornadoes. There's no poisonous snakes, and not much else that will kill you. Instead, we're under snow...

Thanks as always for the kind words Drives :) The images straight from the DJI Mini 4 Pro drone are pretty crazy, even on a 65" 4K HDR TV. I'm shooting in 10 bit HLG formats which translate to very nice HDR images on TVs etc. Clothing would be pretty long topic. We'd save a pile of cash...

Air Return Filter - Yay or nay?

That is the right way to do it. I am using the Lennox X6672 - (16" x 25" x 5) for the HRV intake along with a carbon canister to deal with wild fire smoke. It’s a MERV 16 filter with some very impressive flow numbers.

    Winter Window Moisture

What kind of windows are we talking about? We're North of you, so colder. What works here are either triple glaze low E, or magnetic inner storms. No issues at -25 C, although cellular blinds completely covering the lower part of the window will still cause this issue as they insulate the...

Here's a 10 second clip including a hyperlapse from early this morning :) View it in 4K if you can. How often do you see a lake, unfrozen, with air temps at -20 C?

Temps have dropped down to -25C, so naturally I'm out flying the drone. DJI lists the operating cutoff as -10C, but I'm here in wind chills of -31 C, doing just fine :) Temps are low, however the lake has not frozen yet due to it's mass. The result is some pretty stunning images like this...

Air Return Filter - Yay or nay?

If you have just a few air returns, you can improve efficiency by building a box like this one, used for our HRV return. This way instead of having a single fairly restrictive MERV 13 1" filter on your furnace, you can double or triple the surface area if you have two main returns using larger...

Wifi thermostat with temperature drop alert

Depending on the model you ordered, you can also look into connecting your ERV or HRV to the stat. It does a good job integrating the HVAC fan along with the ERV operation if your ERV/HRV is integrated to your HVAC ducting. Their new "premium" stat also does VOC monitoring and can respond to...

Wifi thermostat with temperature drop alert

I’ve installed a few dozen ecobee stats and have found the low temp and low temp rise alerts very useful. Once to alert us of a loading bay with damaged overhead door seals that was in danger of causing a floor freeze up (radiant) at -25C, and another alert of an entry door left propped again...

Spit out my coffee on that one :) Someone needs to write a "Bob's Treatise on Life Anthology" as a compilation of these pieces of gold. Also, maybe have some sensitivity on the pool pics ;) We're freezing our keesters up here... There's a whole lot of awesomeness in that family...

    ERV questions

We had a “fume” room in my commercial building (designed to be kept negative pressure) that exhausted via a louvered hood, but I added an interior box with a hinged cover so at -30C there were no draft issues. You can install an ERV in your shop too…you just don’t want it part of your living...
