I make a berm using some 2" conduit and EDM rubber. I got the rubber used from a roofing contractor. Just set it up in the fall and fold up the rubber in the spring.

I would go with the shortest path and put a new rod as close as possible to the mast. Local electrical codes typically cover antenna grounding, you might want to look there if you are not inclined to put in a new rod.
