Above 1200 Sq/FT Sellers Antique Machine Co. Shop Build!

Joists are finished, blocking is in, and tongue & groove plywood is going down! I nailed the joists in and also went back and added structural framing screws. The ledger boards also got structural framing screws beneath each joist.

Forklift Thread - what lift(s) do you have?

Ahh perfect timing for a forklift thread. My pile of junk is currently doing what it does best… not running. It’s a 19-something Datsun 5,000 lb. lift. Apparently they were ashamed of these things because you cannot find parts or information on Datsun lifts. It has a Nissan H20 motor running on...

No footers, the loft was a later addition. I don’t expect to have any trouble, most of the pad is 5”+ thick and it’s all fiber reinforced concrete. Nothing heavy will be going up top.

It’s starting to look like a loft now! We got the 6x6 posts set and the first 2x10 headers up. I’ll be adding the second row of 2x10s and then lagging it all together. I’m also adding 4x6 posts at each front corner. The 6x6 posts are notched to accept the doubled up 2x10 header. Should be solid!

I was very fortunate to get my order in before prices went crazy. I also did as much of the work myself as I could. I haven’t wired mine yet either. That’s looking like it’s going to cost me more than the whole building!

There will be some storage on the loft, and I’ll be keeping my lumber rack in my basement. Once all the machines move in I’ll start organizing and working out the storage.

With my dad’s help we got the back wall framing for the loft finished up yesterday! I decided to wrap each steel post with lumber. On each side there is a 2x2 that extends up behind the 2x10. On the face I put a 2x4 that supports the 2x10 beam. It’s all screwed together and screwed into the...

The lumber has been purchased for the loft! I’ll have a 10’ deep, 30’ wide loft over the machine shop in the back of the shop.

This is pretty much what I’ve decided to go with. The front corners will be supported by a 4x6 butted against each wall. Each metal stud will be boxed out with 2x4’s as well. Should be way stronger than it needs to be!

    Shop Loft Questions

I figured someone on here has probably built a similar loft before, and as busy as everyone is I figured I’d try not to bug any contractors haha. I just called a friend of mine who is a GC, and he said it all sounds good. He suggested screwing 2x4s to the face of the metal posts below the 2x10s...

    Shop Loft Questions

We had major issues with their concrete work on my slab. At first they refused to fix it and actually demanded I pay more money for the additional concrete they had to pour. It went back and forth for a couple weeks and I was about to get a lawyer involved when they finally agreed to move on...

    Shop Loft Questions

Great points! Thank you! The building manufacturer won’t speak to me anymore, so I may just have to find the answer about the metal posts on the internet haha. The slab is supposed to be 4” thick but it’s 5-6” most places. All fiber reinforced concrete.

Any other ideas other than T11

I am attaching 2x4s horizontally and then going with used barn tin on the bottom 4’ and beadboard plywood on the top 8’. There will be a 1x4 chair rail trim between the two, and also a treated 1x4 on the bottom 1/4” off the floor.

    Shop Loft Questions

I am going to build a loft in the back of my 30x50 shop. I’m planning on making it 8’ off of the shop floor, the full 30’ wide across the back, and 10’ deep. My side walls are 12’ tall and the peak is 16’, so this should give me decent headroom in the center of the loft and storage on either...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Sellers Antique Machine Co. Shop Build!

I’m a little behind on updating, but nothing real exciting has happened. The insulation is basically finished. 2” foam board with all seams foil taped. I planned on running 1x4s horizontally to attach the paneling to, but they weren’t stiff enough. I picked up a load of 2x4s and started...

Craftsman USA Factory - Bad News

One important thing I have not seen addressed here yet… I had read that the Mac/Proto production would be moving into this new plant with Craftsman. I’m pretty sure SBD had already announced the closure or downsizing of that existing plant. So what does that mean for Mac and Proto? I have a bad...
