Proto vs Williams vs other brands 3/4" drive ratchet-looking for insight

I wish it wasn't the dead of winter right now... not very good for garage sales, flea markets, outdoor auctions, and good deals of that nature. And I don't know if I want to wait until summer to look for a flea market find as I'm busy working in the shop on all of my winter projects right now...

Proto vs Williams vs other brands 3/4" drive ratchet-looking for insight

Of course it's easy to be partial to USA made tools but I'm not against some of the Taiwan made tools today. I've heard and seen A LOT of good things about Tekton ratchets. And like a few others have mentioned, buying new might be better than used if I buy on the internet and not in person, just...

I'm assuming you're referring to a rebuild kit? If so that's a good thought. I see Northern Tool has them for 28.99

Before I start I have to say there is so much good info on garage journal! As a knew member, this forum has been a lifesaver for finding valuable insight on so many different things. I apologize in advance if this thread has already been addressed, but I have spent some time looking through the...

    The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread...

I second this. My Pittsburg locking pliers are junk. Teeth wear so quickly and the handles are not hard to bend. Flimsy, cheap, not worth it. Definitely agree with the Bremen’s being the way to go.

    The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread...

PASS  As many have said already, the Pittsburg impact sockets are great. They simply work. And are very affordable. PASS  The Pittsburg 1/2" drive extendable ratchet is also great. I have put cheater pipes on it, jumped on it, used it for many years. It hasn't broken and the...

What's your favorite 1/4" drive ratchet? New or Vintage

This Proto 1/4" 4749 XL is my favorite in my collection. It by no means is the best out there, nor always the practical/functional. But for some reason I always grab it. Maybe it's the looks. Maybe its the super smooth ratcheting mechanism. Maybe its my own crazy opinion. I just really like it.

Show Us your Vintage New Britain Mustang Tools!

All I have is this one little socket. But it was a size that I was missing in my set so it completed the set and added a new brand to my collection. I picked it up at a pawn shop for a whopping 20 cents. It was pretty tarnished but cleaned up alright.

Was Thorsen ever manufactured elsewhere, not in the USA?

Yes. I have Thorsen Taiwan sockets

    Making your own stubby ratchet

Thanks! While I did obviously have to remove the Armstrong name from the original handle I thought it would be cool/good to keep the model number on it. It also worked out that right after the model number was a good spot to make the cut and have the nub/ball end appropriately sized, almost like...

Do you guys think $125 is good deal for this 44" US general tool box in rough shape?

I agree with this. Any functional tool boxes of this size are hard to find for a cheap price. If the drawers operate (which seems questionable) and the body isn't rusted out, I think it's worth it. I wouldn't let a dirty tool box stop me from buying something as long as it still functions well...

    USA made Ratcheting Box Wrenches

I also have SAE and Metric Armstrong ratcheting wrenches, both double box end and open end/box end combination. Made in USA. High quality in my opinion. Like jsmeece said, no longer made but still around on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/255310336679?hash=item3b71ae92a7:g:gE4AAOSwuOph0KWd

Info on Benchtop Tools in Taiwan ??

I recently picked up a set of used metric Benchtop combination wrenches for $12 for the whole set (8mm-19mm, missing the 18mm). So far I am pleased with the quality and finish. I'm just a weekend DIY guy so for the price you can't beat it imo. Mine are pretty scratched up but the chrome is still...

    Making your own stubby ratchet

I looked through this discussion to get some ideas on a cut off stubby ratchet as I didn't have one in the tool box. I had an extra Armstrong 3/8" drive ratchet laying around that seemed like it would be great for trying this out. Based on what people said worked the best I started out with a...
