ideas for Home Depot discount on large purchase?

Go to the pro desk with your list of items. They routinely discount large purchases over $2,500 or on full units (for example skid of plywood). After they quote your list, apply for a HD credit card which will offer 5-15% of the initial purchase.

CABINET BUILDERS: need input with drawer slides

yes, that is generally the case. The 5mm system screws (confirmat style threads) that most European style hinges use get a fairly good grip the first time. If you unscrew and then try to reuse the hole there is very little strength to the connection.

CABINET BUILDERS: need input with drawer slides

Not unless you plane the sides of the drawers. The reason is the slides mount to the side of the cabinet. The drawer then sits between the slides. The extra 1/4" (two sides) of material will rub against the mounts and especially the heads of the mounting screws. Blum makes a slide specifically...

opinions on DIY running of natural gas line

Actually any pex-Al-pex pipe technically satisfies the code. The pipe in this application is the Aluminum pipe and the pex are considered protective coatings. The major pex companies are starting to push this application. As with all things pex this method has been used in Europe for some time...

installing a sink in garage -- ideas? advice?

How do you protect a garage sink from freezing in the winter? I am not sure if it actually gets below freezing during normal use. But if you are away for a say a week I could see the temperature dropping enough to freeze the pipes.

Anyone willing to make me a bushing removal tool?

Measure up the bushings and take a picture. You might be surprised what you can put together out of hardened steel bushings from Reid or Mcmaster. I put together an e39 rear ball joint press from shaft bushings, thrust bearings and acme threaded rod. Total cost was ~$20 versus $200+ for the BMW...

    J-Bolt Installation

Not a bad idea, but you will run into a few problems. Compacting and finishing the concrete and putting in the sill seal will be difficult using this method. The bigger problem, is squaring up the sill. Even the best foundation usually need to be squared using the 3-4-5 triangle method. A good...

    Running Conduit for wiring

Emt is easy to bend. You need a $20 tool from HD and about an hour to figure out how to measure for offsets or bends. Mike Holt forums has the bending instructions on line. I think depot may even have pre bent 90s and offsets. PVC requires a blanket (about $100) or a heat box to bend ($800). I...

Hard to get a 4 gang box? Double up 2x 2 gang?

Look at the steel boxes carefully. There is a type of single gang box where the sides are held captive with a screw on one end and a metal tab on the other. All you have to do is loosen the screw and place the boxes together. I think the largest box we have made using this technique is 8 gang.

Starting a business designing custom garages

This is a hot area, that most of the large cabinet manufacturers are expanding into. The growth rates are forecasted at 25-60% annually (take this with a wheelbarrel of salt) albeit off a small base. First thing is to do your research what segment of the market are you going to go after. For...

    Any Plumbers on this board?

Tough call. A lot depends on the code enforced in your area. In my area the washer discharge must have an air gap to prevent back flow and to vent gases. If you install a p-trap and attach the discharge directly to the trap then you need to run a vent line to release the gas. The vent has to go...

    built-up posts

We use offset 2x lumber, usually called strongbacks, to build stronger walls than could be built with 4x4 posts. The 2x are lined up to look like an i-beam and then glued and spiked together. Since the fibers are lined up in different planes you eliminate the possibility of weak axis bending...

How would aluminum work for a workbench top?

Wilsonart sells rolls of Al or stainless that is a high pressure laminate. You apply it to a plywood or osb top (smooth surface would be much better) with contact cement the same way you apply formica to a counter top. Cheap and easy solution. It won't dent because it is fully supported by the...

Zip Ties and Rebar for a slab anyone try?

Zip ties will work, but they're tough on the knees and elbows and the inspector might not like it. Kodi Klips will snap right on and are code compliant. About $.05 each. Make an applicator out of a hardwood dowel so you don't have to bend over to apply. www.kodiklip.com
