    Metal behind drywall in garage?

Stop drilling!! If there is a pipe or an electrical line going through the stud it may need to be protected by a metal nailing plate. If this is the case the pipe or wire is less than 1.5" from the face of the drywall. Try drilling the same stud 6" away from the original hole and see if you...

Much respect is due to this man.

That's incredible. Unbelievable craftsmanship. However, a true genius would have made it big enough to sit in.

    Snap-On Scanners

How do the snap-on or matco compare to the generic laptop based OBD/CAN readers like autotap, proscan, VAG etc...? If you have an old laptop, for $300 you can get an interface + software to read and reset the diagnostics on any car from OBD1 to CAN. I've even seen the same setup used to power...

Its trigger operated. This is a picture I found on ebay. The one I bought didn't come with the case and it only has one loading arm. Just wondering what the difference is between the loading arms?

    Hardwood/real wood laminate over concrete?

I have radiant heated suspended slabs in my house. Never had a problem with wood flooring. If you look at the cross section of wood laminate flooring it is basically plywood. You have 5 or 7 plys running in different orientations with a 1/8" or less of veneer on top. It is very stable and does...

How To Build A Parts Washer

Guy on TDR used a dishwasher (wife was out at the time) and baking soda to clean transmission parts. Seemed to work well. If you find a used dishwahser: Calculate the amount of water needed to run a cycle. Then build a reservoir out of 5 gal buckets to hold the solution. Feed the dishwasher...

Remote mounting of compressor pump & motor?

there are two types of unloaders. first type is more expensive it has an integral check valve between the unloader and the tank. This is the one you want. second type is a sequential control. pressure valve closes then a bleed valve unloads the compressor. When the compressor restarts the...

Remote mounting of compressor pump & motor?

Certainly can be done. If I recall correctly you need either a special unloader valve or a check valve between the compressor and the tank. Otherwise on startup the higher pressure tank could flood the cylinder(s) making it difficult to start and causing premature wear.

    Wire Guage

Exception #3 is applicable to most compressors. In this case "listed appliance" refers to any appliance (powered load) that has been tested and certified by a listing agency (such as UL). Therefore the tag accurately reflects the operating parameters and there is no need to use standardized...

wife says for me to build a house

I built our house part-time also. My wife wasn't having any part of waiting 1.5 yrs though. I would basically kit all the parts during the week. Then on the weekends I could put up walls quickly because the plates, studs and headers were all prepared and the sheathing was precut for the...

    Demolition cost?

Cinder block is recyclable into some cement products or as fill. Same with the slab. You might be able to find someone to take down the walls for free in exchange for the block. Given how tight the market is for cement its worth calling around.

    $20 per SF Container garage

I like the idea. I was thinking of building a wood shop using this technique. Port of Newark is selling containers for little more than the scrap price. Salesman tells me you can cut out nearly an entire side of a container without sacrificing structural integrity. Anybody have any real world...

    wiring 101

Definitely you can do this if you have the desire to learn some wiring basics. If you do choose to wire an outlet do yourself a favor and turn off the main breaker, shutting down all power to the house. When working with a dead panel you can relax, take your time and not worry about your hand or...
