Winter Project - Father & Son 64 VW

Thanks for the kind words. It's a fun project. I'm hoping it will help him understand what it takes to build a car from the ground up a little better so he will take better care of it compared to just buying him a Toyota and him trashing it. He has built up some sweat equity in the bug and he's...

Winter Project - Father & Son 64 VW

I bought a 1964 VW bug project for myself a few years ago. I did a little to it here and there but it was always on the back burner as other projects always seem to take all my time and money. Finally, my 15 year old son asked if he could have it. What could I say? :) Here it is when I first got...

How close in size are SAE & Metric?

I work strictly in metric doing 3D design and my hobby is VWs...metric is what I use most. 1" = 25.4mm To go from inch to mm, convert the fraction to decimal and multiply by 25.4 1/2 = .5, .5 x 25.4 - 12.7 To go from mm to inch, divide by 25.4 100mm / 25.4 = 3.937"

The Top 5 tools you want to buy next

    1. bigger tool box (have a craftsman top & bottom but it's old and only 24" wide or so...and full) 2. plasma cutter 3. more impact sockets 4. new metric 3/8" drive sockets (missing quite a few) 5. screwdrivers (need some good ones, craftsman are junk) 6. 110v mig welder (I have a Lincoln 255c)...

    Hobby related non business cards?

Exactly. I've used VistaPrint for my wife's mobile auto-detailing business and got nice cards for next to nothing. I bought some magnets, too. No complaints here. Just pay attention when you are ordering as stated. I've been meaning to get some "hobby" cards but haven't yet. One of the forums I...

    Who still prefers "stick" welding?

I think you are probably right. I did not think of it that way. I have welded 1" plate with my "little" Lincoln 255c before but even that is a "bigger" machine than most non-welders have. I would bet that most guys are comparing a 135 amp or so mig to a 200 amp stick machine. Has anyone...

    Welding on a working vehicle

I could see if they hooked an exhaust hose up to the tank. The gas vapors have to be displaced. DO NOT WELD A GAS TANK IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!

    Who still prefers "stick" welding?

Here's a pic of some sub-arc I've done. This particular application uses two rolls of 1/8" ER70s wire feeding at the same time... right about 900 amps!! The root pass and the end caps (shown below) were welded with .052 by hand. in process (arc barely visible below flux) wide!! 120" long

    Who still prefers "stick" welding?

I work for CAT as a Manufacturing Specialist (3D design (fixtures), tech manuals, process improvement, etc). I was also a welder for 15 years (nine yrs with CAT, two as a trainer). I've carried a few certs. over the years but it has been a while. I've welded some O/A, some TMAW (cast steel...

    In The Market: Cordless Drill

I bought the DeWalt 18v impact drill about 3-1/2 years ago. I bought the 4 pc kit and and one extra charger and 3 extra batteries. I use the snot out of them...at least one tool gets used almost daily. The drill is the best I've ever used (had a few before), the little circular saw will rip 3/4"...

is this miller welding helmet good?

I have the Jackson EQC 3n1. It's pretty good for about $260. I may step up to a Miller Elite next time.

    Welding on a working vehicle

The newest vehicle I've welded on was probably a mid 90s MR2. I've welded on quite a few vehicles though...mostly bodywork or exhaust systems. I've just disconnected the battery. I've never heard of any problems from the owners. Most newer fuel tanks are plastic. Common sense should tell you...

    Beetle Building

Put them on thesamba.com. I can tell you from experience that "all or nothing" collections are a lot harder to sell than if you split it up into manageable sets.

Garage envy, summertime, doors open, etc

I'd love to have a little more of a "finished" garage than I have now. Have a bay for the dirty work on one side and a "man cave" on the other side or above or whatever with a pool table, my toy collection and a few other things and it would be perfect. I love looking at all the killer garages...

    my 20x20 metal building

I've been working on the VWs some more lately. Here's a rotisserie I built so I can work on the body. ...with the 64 bug body on it. I've been working on the pan more. I narrowed the front beam 4" for better tire clearance since the car is lowered quite a bit. I still have to take it...
