2nd electrical panel off main panel

it is unfortunate they only put in 3/4" pipe. I have been criticized for saying if you're going to dig the trench (which is most of the work) then you should put in bigger pipe. this is a perfect example of why.

Portable, NG generator, THD a concern? Inverter?

whatever you end up doing, definitely plan to run your sump pump from the generator. do not count on that battery backup system to work when you need it to. there are so many ways those things can fail and you won't know it until it happens (unless you make a hobby out of testing & maintaining...

Mounting electrical boxes "proud" in finished pole barn

btw I assume you will have some exterior lights & recepticles. one of my pet peeves is loose exterior outlet boxes. every house I've ever owned has loose exterior recepticles that get pushed back into the siding, or get pulled out from it, and the lights flop in the wind, and it really pi$$es me...

Mounting electrical boxes "proud" in finished pole barn

you're hanging drywall in a pole barn? ok. I assume the 2x6 bracing has the 5.25" face flush with the wall framing (posts). so you're saying if you run a 2x4 behind it that creates a mounting surface for the outlet box 1.5" deep into the wall. and your 2-1/8 box only sticks out 1/8"?? hmm...

Multi Wire Branch Circuit Disconnect Question

wow that is a bizzare code. it absolutley does apply to me (and pretty much any garage with power). although we were on NEC 2014 when I got my permit. we are on either 2107 or 2020 now. but why require a dedicated circuit if there's an exception for an exterior recepticle? so running my 12"...

Multi Wire Branch Circuit Disconnect Question

is that true if the branch circuit comes from a subpanel in the detached structure? if so then I totally violated it and didn't get caught. but I don't think my inspector would've known the difference.

Multi Wire Branch Circuit Disconnect Question

if you install the subpanel then you are not running a MWBC, you are running a 4 wire feeder to the garage. if this is really just for lighting and a 120 recepticle, then the subpanel is overkill. in fact you only need one hot. but it looks like you're a car guy... put some real power in that...

Different way to run electric for generator power

+1 on the interlock method if you have 2 spare slots to add the required double pole breaker. use this to get the 240v through the wall https://www.homedepot.com/p/Reliance-Controls-30-Amp-Power-Inlet-Box-PB30/202213702 then you can run whatever you want within reason. all the other goofy stuff...

New breaker tripping...old breaker is fine

I didn't want to come out and say it directly, but I suspect that is not the case. I suspect it has only happened when connected to the new breaker, and that is coincidental. I think if he leaves it connected long enough the combination of factors that cause the tripping will occur on the old...

New breaker tripping...old breaker is fine

@jjscott I fought a similar gremlin with my sump pump. It would intermittently trip the 15a breaker. I tried at least 100 times to reproduce the failure on demand, but never could. The pump seemed to work perfectly fine. I stepped up to a 20a breaker (yes it was 12ga wire), then swapped out a...

New breaker tripping...old breaker is fine

I'm talking about transient inrush, as in >70a for 10 or 20msec. that would probably trip it, but like I said unlikely the xformer is pulling that much even for 1 cycle unless it is faulty. more likely the load is intermittently soft-shorted, and when the timer kicks on it trips the panel...

New breaker tripping...old breaker is fine

I suppose its possible that transformer is drawing a high enough inrush current at start up to intermittently trip the newer breakers, but that doesn't seem likely. I have had that type of thing happen with old sump pumps, but they draw 20+ amps on start up even when they're new. a handful of...

New breaker tripping...old breaker is fine

I may have missed this, but is the new breaker AFCI or dual function, whereas the old one is GFCI? they look similar. also, to clarify, did you try to actually switch the circuits inside the panel? that is, put the wires from the old breaker on the new one, and vice versa? what does your...

300 foot undeground run- wire size

I think you'll find that digging the trench is by far the hardest part of your project. 300' 2ft deep is a lot of digging even with a trencher. you will hit boulders, roots, old cinder blocks, maybe a buick harmoic balancer, etc. since you're doing all that work why not put in bigger conduit...

but #2 Al is only rated for 90a... and #2 Cu only for 115. that was my point.

Wire pull thru 2 inch conduit critique please.

i've got scraps of both outside in the freezing cold. both (xhhw and thhn) are equally pliable. the thhn has a smooth/slippery jacket, the xhhw is rubbery. I do believe the xhhw is a more durable jacket, but the rubbery texture causes more friction. full disclosure, an electrician friend of...

Wire pull thru 2 inch conduit critique please.

I respect your opinion, but the OP is not a pro and someone needs to tell him that #1 xhhw is harder to pull than #1 thwn. I'm not talking about Al vs copper, I'm talking about the jacket. I know this because I just finished pulling 1/1/1/6 xhhw2 through 2" pipe, and 1/1/1/6 thwn through 1-1/4"...
