Too large, honestly. 20lb. is pretty heavy and most 50lb. CO2s we see are wheel units. CO2s are supposed to be hydrotested every 5 years I believe.

No need to thank me. Others that have chimed in have provided more knowledge than I have on some things. I'm just glad folks are more aware of what they have protecting their shops.

That seems awfully high on their prices. We usually charge around $3 for each inspection. Also, all Kiddes are cheap, some are just cheaper than others.

I asked one of our guys up front for some prices, just for reference. All prices are for a 10lb. ABC extinguisher. Companies in your area will vary, but these should help with ballpark prices. 6 year service: $22 (about $4 more for a recharge if your powder has been discharged)...

What did that compare with for a new 10lb. unit?

Hydro testing is done every 12 years, while a normal servicing is done every 6 for dry chem extinguishers. The date of manufacture is found on various spots, but is usually found on the label (lower section for most Amerex) or the bottom of the cylinder (most Ansul). Sometimes they are very...

The bad thing about some Buckeyes is that they tend to leak more than other brands like Ansul or Amerex. The good thing about Buckeyes is when they do leak, they usually show they have no pressure. You're probably good, but if they haven't been serviced in 6 years or longer, you need to have...

Very good choice for home use. A 5lb. extinguisher in each the kitchen and laundry room plus a 10lb. unit in the garage would be great.

If you can afford a clean agent like Halon 1211 or Halotron, go with that in case your high end stuff ever catches fire. It doesn't have nearly the mess a dry chem extinguisher does. The size and quantity of the extinguisher(s) is dependent on the size and layout of your shop. It wouldn't be a...

Keter Work Table $49 at Walmart

There were 2 at the nearest Walmart yesterday, so I got one. They were on clearance for $39.99. There is still one left if anybody is looking for one. Not sure if any of the other Walmart stores in Little Rock have any.

Halon and Halotron are great but very expensive. We had a 9lb. Halotron come in to the shop discharged yesterday. It was around $300 to refill.

I figured they varied some from state to state. We still hydro and 6 year Generals as long as they are 1984 and newer. Most of the Generals we work on are actually the ones they made right before going bankrupt in 2001. We have to reuse the valve stems, but o-ring are still available, as are...

Any clean agent is expensive, at least that I am familiar with. The agents are over $25 per pound to refill. I haven't checked what CO2 refills are running lately, but I can check for you. I am not sure how much the cost varies from one area to another, but I would assume it isn't by much.

I agree wholeheartedly. I sometimes forget that some people are not nearly as comfortable handling extinguishers as I am, so thank you for reminding me of that and helping folks out that may not be used to them. This thread is all about helping others, and I appreciate your help mightily with...

Thank you for the offer. I plan to be in Arkansas for the rest of my life, but if it is the Lord's will for that to change, and I end up in LA, I'll be sure to be in touch. I am licensed in portable extinguishers, nothing fancy like sprinklers or anything.

Just a point of clarification on the pre 1984 extinguishers. If you ask for one, make sure the company knows it is only for home use and you do not need it to be tagged. Extinguisher companies will no longer be able to hang their service tags on these extinguishers are Jan. 1, 2015, but for...

I think garages, kitchens are the big ones, but the laundry room is great place to have one since dryer fires are fairly common (clean your lent traps and exhaust tubes). The basement would also be a good idea. I think bedrooms are overkill, to be honest. Just make sure you have working smoke...
