Help! My rotary phase converter made smoke!

It fired up once and it powered up the lathe just fine. I shut it down and fired it up again about 20 minutes later and it blew the cap. The same thing happened the first time it blew a cap. Sent from my iPhone using Garage Journal

I believe it will be. It wasn't making any noises and was running just fine, but it was going through water like a steam locomotive. We're pulling apart the bottom end tonight.

J H Williams vintage hand tools

I was reorganizing my tool box this evening and came across this Williams Superrench. It’s a 6 point 9/16 on both ends. I’m not sure why I never use it, because I can think of many instances where it would have come in pretty handy. It’s moved to a more visible part of the drawer. Sent from...

Help! My rotary phase converter made smoke!

Ok, incoming power is from my sub panel via 50A breaker. No schematic. I was measuring from line to ground. One of these capacitors has oil on the top and it looks like some got onto the inside of the cabinet. Here are some pics. There are 2 banks of capacitors - left & right side. The...

Help! My rotary phase converter made smoke!

My lathe & mill came with a home built phase converter that worked great in the prior owner’s shop. I just wired it in my shop and it appeared to work fine, but the output voltages were 120, 121 and 173. Then I fired it up again yesterday and it apparently blew up a capacitor. Does anyone...

    Show off your vintage lathe.

Here's my old 16 inch Leblond. I'd like to find out what year this thing was made. I am in the process of moving it from the barn to my new workshop, and I'm anxious to get power to her and make some chips.

Enclosed the lean to. Need some machine shop layout tips!

I had the 15’ x 32’ lean to enclosed so I can move my mill, lathes and some other metalwork tools out of the main shop space. I have a couple of layout ideas, but I’m open to suggestions. Here’s the legend: mill, lathe, small lathe, band saw, grinder, workbench, phase converter, drill press...

    Milling

They were supposed to start a machining class at the local community college about a year ago, and I put my name on the list. Unfortunately, that program never started. I did get acquainted with a gentleman who is a retired high school machine shop teacher. He is going to give me some one on...
