    Mystery part

Found this pic of a Cadillac Pla-check with a block inserted that's a pretty close match - interestingly, the clip's on the bottom - probably just installed upside-down.

    Mystery part

Wow. Thanks RoninB4. It sounds like a plausible explanation. I inherited two height gauges, but they're both the vernier type - I've never seen the stepped type, although my grandfather was a tool&die maker from the 40s through the 80s so he'd likely have used those.

Layout of a bolt circle when there's already a hole in the center.

Thanks guys. Seems so obvious now, but I was really stumped. I actually have two circles to scribe. Transfer punch will work great on one, but not the other. Scribing off either the diameter of the center hole or that of the OD of the plate will work fine on the one I can't transfer punch...

Layout of a bolt circle when there's already a hole in the center.

I need to scribe a circle for bolt holes in a plate that already has a hole in the center. About the only solution I can come up with is to machine a temporary plug that will fit the hole so I can put the point of the compass scribe in the center of the plug. Just wondering if there's some...

    Mystery part

It's attracted to a magnet, but not a magnet itself. I noticed there's some wear marks on the inside of the U legs on the clip (you can just see on the "mystery part 3" pic in the first post. Seems to indicate it slid under something with a slightly larger diameter that passed vertically...

    Mystery part

I'll verify. That blue paper towel was on top of a cast iron surface plate, so it should have stuck if it was.

    Mystery part

Unfortunately, I've figured out where most of the other things go. Was things like thumbscrews, micrometer wrenches, dial indicator mount parts, little allen wrenches, etc. I did get a Lufkin stand, like this pic I snagged from google, but nothing that's round on it matches the U or the space...

    Mystery part

This part was in with a bunch of precision tools I inherited from my father and grandfather - micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gauges, etc. It was in a tin with a bunch of odds'n'ends. It's possible it's from a machine/device long gone. Curious if anyone recognizes it and knows what...

    Light Blue Hammered Paint

That's weird. At one point I was looking for Hammerite here in the States and I got the impression they were discontinuing it for some reason. Maybe it's just not importable anymore.

    Light Blue Hammered Paint

I don't see why not. I believe others have sprayed hammer finish Rust-Oleum. Only caveats I see is that you need to keep it mixed and it dries pretty fast. It seems a little too thick to me out of the can, but I haven't tried thinning it to see what effect that has on the finish. Might be...

    Light Blue Hammered Paint

So I have a potential solution. Rustoleum hammered silver + Mixol blue #9. Both available on Amazon I put about 8 drops of tint in about 1/4 oz of paint. I think it's a little too blue, but I'll see tomorrow what it looks like in sunlight. Hard to get a picture with accurate color...

    Telescoping bore gauge disassembly (Lufkin)

So a little more info and a pic. The ones I can get apart are actually Starrett. Upper one in the photo. The lower one (Lufkin) is where I've disassembled as far as I can, but there appears to be a little pin recessed in the head keeping the anvils in place.

    Telescoping bore gauge disassembly (Lufkin)

Have a set of Lufkin telescoping bore gauges. Came in a plastic pouch and I discovered I have some moisture issues in the garage. They have some light rust on them, luckily mostly on the handles. But they are old and the oil inside is a little gunky. So I've been disassembling, lightly...

    caliper/divider replacement C-spring

After some cleanup, one of the inside calipers missing the bow spring is a Brown & Sharpe 815. Didn't realize B&S was out of business until I did some googling. The other appears to be a Union - also an 8" but the arms are thinner than the B&S and the spring would need a smaller gap between...

    caliper/divider replacement C-spring

I'm going through some old tools that need cleaning up. Have some old spring calipers/dividers that are in very usable condition but the C-spring on the end that tensions the arms is missing. Have them soaking in Evaporust, to get some flash rusting off them, but I didn't see any manufacturer...

    Yet another hammered paint question

Like many here, I have a project that I'd ideally use light blue hammered paint on. From what I've read online, Hammerite has gotten out of that business and Rustoleum is having issues producing many of their colors, specifically the blues and greens (and reds). Rustoleum silver hammered is...

    Inch tools

Well, to throw another term into the mix, this is what Encyclopedia Britannica says about the inch: "inch, unit of British Imperial and United States Customary measure equal to 1/36 of a yard. " So I guess that's where Imperial comes from. "United States Customary" is a new one for me...
