    Welding bottle question

Dreamer, I used to live in that area (Morris IL), and I took a night class in welding at Joliet Junior College and really liked it. This is an intro class to a real-deal 2-yr welding program for people going into the profession where the students learn every type of welding in every possible...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

grrr - this sounds familiar. The only thing worse than needing a tool you don't have is needing a tool that you forgot you had!

Buggered Threads - Will a thread restorer set work?

The Lang kit is great, I use it way more than I would have guessed when I first bought it; almost any time I reuse a fastener I run the thread chaser around/thru it because it cleans the threads up and straightens them out. The only catch is that the starting threads need to be good (or at...

How much weight would you say these casters are rated for?

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

hmm... I see what you're saying, but that's maybe more of a quality of drive (= quality of life!) issue that you noticed but most people would be oblivious to. well, at least it's getting your family around, and it gives your wife a chance to appreciate and brag about your skills!

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Am I wrong in thinking that it seems wrong that you have to work on either the struts or the steering before 80k miles? Unless of course your wife is offroading her Ford or escaping the police by jumping it over opening drawbridges etc....

Which twelve point sockets are required on modern vehicles?

I ran into a couple of 12-pt bolts taking the oil pan off of a 2011(?) Kia Forte; can't remember the size but 10 or 12 mm I guess. Was very excited because my very first Craftsman socket set I bought in the early 80s had 6-pt and 12-pt sockets and that Forte was the first time I ever needed one...

Milwaukee Fuel Drill Stops repeatedly when drilling holes

What size battery are you using? I ask because I had a situation not remotely in the same class/application as what you're doing, but your story still rang a bell: I was cutting aluminum gutter covers with my milwaukee 12V rotary tool (2460-20) and it kept cutting out like it was hot, and then...

Can't figure out how to renew Alliance membership

Thanks - I gave that a shot, but got the page with the red bar that sent me back to the Your Account page; couldn't find a different purchase option anywhere along that route. Since oldwino was able to renew after the expiration date, maybe this is a GJ safety feature that prevents those of us...

Can't figure out how to renew Alliance membership

Sorry if I'm a dummy but I can't figure out how to renew my GJ Alliance membership. I received a reminder email and followed the link in the email to a "Your Account / Purchased Upgrades" page, followed the "CLICK HERE" link after "For more information on the Alliance...", got to the "The...

    Ratcheting breaker bar

And eventually the ratcheting mechanism breaks (but it takes some doing!) and then it becomes a regular ol breaker bar. But that's OK because it only cost $20 so you just throw that one in the car for emergencies and go get another one.

    Ratcheting breaker bar

HF has a 3/8 x 18" for $20: https://www.harborfreight.com/3-8-eighth-inch-drive-ratcheting-breaker-bar-66388.html I use it when my regular ratchet is too feeble to get something loose (can't be me that's feeble) but the fastener doesn't seem worthy of dragging out the 1/2" breaker bar or I...

    PVC Cement

A red-letter day - a GJ discussion where thriftiness is the order of the day, instead of "Buy two, you never know when you'll need a backup!" After all, think of how many tools we can buy if we're not spending $3.52 every year on a new can of PVC cement at Walmart! That said, I know how...

SK Tool Collection, who's loving on SK?

Currently my only S-K is this SAE flare nut wrench set - I already had a Craftsman Pro metric set that I got years ago; never bothered to get the corresponding SAE set back then because I didn't think I'd ever need SAE. However, the brake proportioning valve on my 1998 Jeep wrangler froze and...

    Coupling Treated and Non-treated Posts

There are a lot of multi-story back porches in Chicago that are made out of notched- and bolted-together 6x6's. Looks a little harrowing, but they - well, let's say they hardly ever collapse, and it usually takes a big drunken party to do it.... But thinking about it a little more, the...

    serious cold front coming

Based on my memories of getting into a very cold car in a very cold garage on many very cold mornings in northern IL, I'm afraid so. The only thing an unheated garage does overnight is save you from the misery of scraping your windshield and (worst of all) shoveling your car out of its parking...

    serious cold front coming
