Where do you buy your St. St. Fasteners?

You can often find a good selection of stainless steel fasteners at marinas and boat sales and service places if you have any nearby. Similarly, we have Academy Sports here and they have plastic boxes with an assortment of stainless fasteners in their boating section. DC

Stiffening Floor Joists to reduce flex

Take a 2x10 and rip it in half (or whatever dimension lines up with the holes for your electrical wire). Cut small holes in the cut edge for enough room for the wires. Sister one half from the top using glue and construction screws. Sister the other half from the bottom being sure to glue the...

    Spray Foam - Residential

Here's a link to a good article on ventilating tight houses: http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blogs/dept/musings/designing-good-ventilation-system There are other good ventilation articles on the GBA site but you might have to be a member to access some of them. DC

    Spray Foam - Residential

No need to go any further with this contractor. He doesn't know what he is talking about and is likely just parroting information from the early days of spray foam when bad installers were spraying the wrong mix of the two chemicals resulting in perpetual off-gassing. Just make sure you have...

    Wifi to the garage

The Asus router was about 50' to the near wall of my workshop and about 75' to the furthest spot in the shop. The signal has to penetrate two interior walls and two exterior brick walls. The metal door on the shop is in the direct path of the signal and the shop is insulated with mineral wool...

    Wifi to the garage

I was in similar situation as the OP with my workshop. I did have the Asus router referenced above but it still provided a marginal signal in the shop. I purchased a Ubiquiti outdoor rated access point, mounted it under the eave of the house nearest the workshop, ran an ethernet cable back to...

A few stationary air compressor questions...

Do it right - now and again in 12 months. Codes don't allow standard plugs on 7.5 HP compressors. You either need to hard wire it or find a fancy arc snuffer type plug that is rated at 7.5HP (price that one and be shocked). Disconnect switches are cheap and easily relocated. DC

    fresh air for the house

Yes if properly designed and installed. If you are in a humid area, choose the ERV instead of an HRV. DC

What is your incoming voltage residential?

Not unusual. Power system voltages can fluctuate based on load. Typically, you'll see the lowest voltages when power system load is at a peak (typically late afternoon on a summer day) and you'll see the highest voltages when system load is at a minimum (typically early AM before sun is up)...

Johns Manville Insulation / asbestos question

If it's pure rockwool, it does not contain asbestos. I've never seen or heard of rockwool containing asbestos. But, peace of mind might warrant contacting the manufacturer as suggested. DC

    Insulating and Metal Roof

Most building scientists don't like regular insulation (fiberglass, mineral wool, cellulose, etc) in direct contact with the underside of the roof deck. Regular insulation generally requires a vent channel between the top of the insulation and the bottom of the roof deck of about 1". There are...

Can I use a "brighter" florescent bulb without replacing the fixture?

Fluorescent bulbs lose "brightness" over time. If these bulbs are very old, you can improve the output just by swapping to new ones of the same type. You also might try removing the lenses that cover the fixtures and see if that improves the output. But, given the size of your space, I think...

Please comment on my proposed Air Outlet setup

I did something similar when plumbing my workshop for air. I would recommend a brass bushing instead of the steel one. I ended up opting for fewer drops in the shop by going with a 100' hose reel at one drop and 25' hoses at the other drops. I also plumbed each drop with a shut off valve...

Best process for cleaning old electrical terminals/plugs

Agreed. I've always used dielectric grease on contacts, especially marine and auto. It also works great on spark plug boots to keep them from sticking to the insulator. DC

    insulation for steel building house

Not sure about that. There is a difference in open cell foam and closed cell foam. I certainly don't see an issue with spraying closed cell foam (which is already an effective vapor retarder) against the vinyl backing. Open cell foam is more vapor permeable. I'd run the question by the gurus...

    Building my first garage. Questions....

Depends on where you live and local building codes. I was able to draw up my own workshop using Sketchup. Printed some very basic plans on 8.5" x 11" printer paper and my contractor had no issues using them to get a building permit. DC

    1/2" black iron pipe length?

Actually, I was suggesting an alternative to Option 1. Leave the ****** and attach the tee directly to it. This will require disassembly of the 1" main line but if it could be done, would eliminate the need for a union and would allow you to use your existing pipes without cutting. Basically...

    1/2" black iron pipe length?

Could you replace the elbow below the ****** with a tee? The main line would stay in the approximate same location and then you could tap off the bottom of the tee for the new line. Might have to disassemble part of the main line to do this which requires finding a good spot to begin...

How much cooler will my shop be with closed cell foam?

Bingo. With the addition of insulation, the OP's shop will be cooler and more comfortable during the time of peak outdoor temperatures as shown by his laser thermometer. DC
