How much cooler will my shop be with closed cell foam?

Because that contractor doesn't want you comparing the cost of spray foam to more conventional insulation. R-value is r-value and is a measure of heat transfer through conduction. If your climate requires R30, then that's how much you need. Period. Now, closed cell spray foam does a superior...

Don't have a pic but my Milwaukee 12V stuff hangs by the belt clip on large cup hooks under a shelf in a cabinet. DC

    Who has actually used aircompressorsdirect.com?

I just ordered my compressor from them a few weeks ago: https://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/Puma-TE-5040V-Air-Compressor/p13941.html No issues with ACD. Good customer service. Did have a minor issue with the freight company. The info ACD sent me with the tracking number said the freight...

Newbie Insulating an Old Garage: Questions

Welcome to GJ. It looks like the foil paper was intended to be a radiant barrier. I'm guessing you could repair the damaged area and leave it as it. What concerns me a little is your location and the fact that you can see daylight through the wood gaps. I think you should post your question...

Help a newb insulate a new shop

You definitely don't have to vent the roof but the details must be correct to avoid issues. But, you do need enough foam insulation under the roof to prevent condensation from forming. There are charts to help determine how thick that layer of insulation needs to be and is very climate...

Venting a High Eff Gas Furnace?

My high efficiency furnace install uses a PVC concentric vent like this one: http://www.homedepot.com/p/2-in-PVC-Concentric-Vent-Kit-CVENT2/204514476 Mine is installed horizontally through the wall. Maybe this would make your project easier? Look up the model number of your furnace online...

    Floor grinding

You could use an angle grinder with a diamond blade to knock down any high spots and then fill the low spots with something like Ardex Feather Finish. But, this product is not designed to be wear layer. It's designed to be covered up. I had a discussion about this a few weeks ago with a...

    Interesting power issue

Some PoCos will come out and temporarily install a "disturbance analyzer". These devices will monitor and record the waveform and take snapshots of any deviation from normal. The captured waveform can be compared to other known anomalies to help determine the source. They are very effective...

Looking for a reasonably quiet belt driven ~30gal compressor

It's a bit more than you want to spend but you might consider this 5HP Puma compressor: https://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/Puma-TE-5040V-Air-Compressor/p13941.html I just finished installing it and I'm very happy with it so far (limited use). Doesn't leak, is very quiet compared to the...

    Wire stuck in plastic conduit

Try putting the fish tape in again and if it gets stuck, mark it and measure how much fish tape you were able to get into the conduit. Then use that measurement to estimate where to dig. Maybe all you'll have to dig is one hole and then cut and repair the conduit. DC

    Quality Fittings

I like Milton air couplers. Type V are high flow and the female couplers will also accept the more common Type M male inserts. You can find a pretty good assortment of Milton at Northern Tool if you have one nearby or they are readily available online. DC

AFCI breakers and the 2017 NEC

In that case, I wouldn't waste one minute or one cent on AFCIs. Just put GFCIs where they are needed for safety and forget you know anything about AFCIs. DC

    Help me choose new Compressor

Just gave up my oil-less as well. Just. Too. Damn. Loud. Picked up this Puma: https://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/Puma-TE-5040V-Air-Compressor/p13941.html Night and day difference. Can't believe how quiet it is compared to the screaming banshee I gave up. I had mine in a separately...

Vinyl backed insulation vs blown in

Radiant barriers do work. They are rarely cost effective. The Oak Ridge study only used R13 fiberglass insulation and no air sealing. Once you get proper amounts of insulation and proper air sealing, the additional heat gain stopped by the radiant barrier is generally not cost effective...

Vinyl backed insulation vs blown in

Radiant barriers are rarely cost effective if you've already properly insulated and properly air sealed. IF you can get the material for free or very low cost and IF you can do the work yourself, it might be worth it in the long run. But, your best bang for the buck is to air seal and insulate...

A few stationary air compressor questions...

You probably should post your electrical questions in the Lighting and Electrical forum. As best I can remember, a 7.5HP compressor must be hardwired and depending on proximity to the breaker panel, may need a disconnect near the compressor. DC

Best way to cut 4/0 battery cable (on boat with limited room)

This can work but can mangle the ends if you're not careful. As mentioned use a fine toothed blade. Put a worm drive hose clamp on either side of the cut and tighten as much as you can. Leave just enough room between the two clamps for the saw blade. DC

    Unexplained Doubling of Electric Use

Your assumption is correct. Forgot about this one. Kinda rare but I've seen it happen. This is not out of the realm of possibility. One time I helped a guy discover his extra high electric consumption was due to a neighbor illegally tapping into his underground electric service. DC

    Unexplained Doubling of Electric Use

A few thoughts. Any chance your electric meter was changed out about the time you noticed the increase? As electric meters get old, they tend to slow down. Changing them out returns the accuracy to normal. Any chance the baseboard heat has been on anyway? Or if you have a heat pump, any...
