Sounds like you need to invole and engineer to design your foundation/basement for sure. Sand defentily isn't good for a base but it is great for drainage. By the way what a goregous area I'm jealous I grew up in Michigan. Moved over ten years ago due the ecomic down turn.

They make waste oil heaters that are designed to just burn waste oil. Unless you run a shop I don't know that it is cost effective to buy a heater just to heat your shop with waste oil. I haven't ever really looked for a cost effective way to burn it home. With a little money there isn't...
