We have any computer/video/photo editing guys on here?

Costco has pretty good deals on computers. I bought a Lenovo laptop for about $100 less that I would have paid elsewhere. If you've got a card (or a friend with a card) it's good place to start. 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, reasonably fast i7 processor, 15" touch screen - $899. I use it for some of the...

Intermixing Metric and SAE Sizes in Tool Storage

Me? Never. My truck (Dodge), motorcycle (Suzuki), chainsaws (Stihl, Husky & Echo) are all metric. My car (71 MGB GT) is all SAE. Every once in a while I have to fumble through a few wrenches to determine if an unknown fastener is metric or SAE, but not often enough to matter.

okay to ask for reduction of bill for stucco job?

I buy tools to make my work go faster. Should I be paid less because I can get the job done faster? Would you pay a framing crew more because they used hammers than if they used nail guns? It would take longer. Would you pay less to have a job done in 4 hours with 2 workers, rather than one...

    Fasteners on Pickup Trucks

Not trying to be snarky, but if you're planning to fix broken trucks on the side of the road and don't know what tools it takes... I kind of wonder about your skill set. Are you able to fix broken Chevys? In reality, there's enough SAE & metric to carry both, unless you have a bias against (or...

    Powder coat fumes

No fumes at all from spraying (it's a dry powder) and almost nothing from the oven. Fumes from etching and cleaning can be avoiding by using Simple Green for parts cleaning.

Can I Use a Pellet stove to heat my shop?

We heat a 1,800 sq ft shop with a traditional wood stove. It really helps that we have several partitions, and can keep doors closed. We put a metal "shield" behind the stove to keep the wall cooler and to help direct the heat up. There's also a fan behind it. It takes a while to heat the...

Have you considered pouring a concrete benchtop to add mass and reduce vibration?

$45 shipping is a painful. Still a good deal, but...

    Stihl MS170

For so few trees, I wonder if renting a saw is an option? Or would it be less expensive to hire somebody to cut the trees than to buy a saw? Stihl makes good saws, and so does Husky. On the lower end of things, Echo also makes a good one, but they generally won't last as long.

    Harbor Freight Predator gas engines

My dad bought one to replace the B&S on a 25 ton log splitter. Easy bolt on, and everything was awesome - until it died. He hadn't bought enough stuff at HF to know to buy the extended warranty. He bought a second one, and a warranty. It works great. It clearly has more power, but also burns...

    Propane Fireplace

Because he wants a fireplace, doesn't have natural gas and doesn't want to deal with firewood? I have a Vermont Casting propane "wood stove" in my current place, and it's not too expensive to run. However, my place is very, very small. I think you could affordably heat a room with it, but not a...

    Chain Saw Recommendation

Do you really pay $15 a gallon for gas? That's more than 3 times the price for ethanol-free premium at my local station. It's your money so I don't care, but that seems like burning money for no good reason.

    Quality Fastners

Mostly it's because of a new guy showing huge attitude. Act like a chump, get treated like one.

    Trusty-Cook, Forum Hammer Set?

I'm interested for sure. For tools that occasionally go outside into the woods, I appreciate bright colors.

    Quality Fastners

I'd venture a guess that your definition of quality (random grades of "mostly corrosion free") is different than a lot of folks here. In any case, your attitude *****.

We all knew this day was coming . . .

I stopped shopping at Sears when the quality of the tools went downhill and left for good when the customer "service" went to zero. If they sold good products at a fair price they'd still be in business.

    Acetylene vs tig torch

Unless you're moving everything in a small car, I don't see how they would take up that much room in the moving van/truck. I just moved my torches (3 different sizes, plus multiple tips and accessories), regulators and bottles 400 miles. I don't use them often, but the replacement cost on nice...

    Rest In Peace Dewalt Flexvolt.

I was a kid in L.A. in the early 70's. On bad days the air was brown. Complain about the "CARB bozos" all you want, but the air is actually pretty decent these days. Sorry if clean air offends you somehow, but CARB and the EPA solved an actual problem.

    Rest In Peace Dewalt Flexvolt.

Wow - thanks for sharing the photos. I had no idea those existed. Was the Riobe sold in the US? Most of their stuff here seems like homeowner grade, but that clearly isn't the market for a 2 stroke sawzall.

    T. Wilmots. R. Paulk. Need another youtube hero with a plan, method, or system.

I really like that Paulk workbench. I'm going to build something very similar when I get the shop & house built. Jeremey Schmit is good. He's very meticulous, and has interesting ideas. He's also young enough that it should be fun to watch him learn and grow. I plan to make his 2x72" belt grinder.
