    Decent Soldering Iron?

Not cheap, but good. I've had one for 10(?) years, and it's awesome. It works in the shop, where I've done wiring on my motorcycle. I've used it outside on a cold windy day to fi a bunch of problems on my early 70's MG (Lucas!). I've done really delicate circuit board (through hole, not surface...

Laser Cutter/Engraver in an office space?

The glowforge is awesome, and I know a few guys who have one. That said, a makerspace is a very different kind of shop. Tools get abused, no matter how good your education program is. Is the glowforge strong enough to handle abuse, while being constantly run? I doubt it. To put it another...

In search of the right garage workbench cabinets

Have you considered kitchen cabinets? They'd be as deep as the HF box, and probably similar money. You could use drawers or shelves. You might need more steel to support the benchtop, depending on how you're going to use it. Take a look at the cabinets on the right in ARFLY's reply.

Laser Cutter/Engraver in an office space?

I strongly suggest avoiding Epilog. I was a director in a chain of makerspaces for 3 years, and Epilog was a massive pain in our ***. Parts would fail, and we'd have to shipthem back, wait a week for inspection, then wait for them to be mailed back. Even though we had spent $300,000 with...

    Old Barn Demo Costs

I don't know where you're located, but you may want to look into self testing and disposal, if the shingles are asbestos. In my area, all construction waste going to the dump needs to be tested. I had to demo a mobile home, so I contacted an asbestos tester. I then found out that I can self...

Garages: are they for parking in?

    I'm building a new place. 20 x 40 house 24 x 24 garage for parking 24 x 16 woodshop 32 x 40 shop. Not for parking All under 1 roof.

Backhoe vs miniex for roads, sitework.

I chose a mini-ex (Takauchi 125) over a hoe. It's much, much slower than a hoe and tears up the ground a little more. However, it hauls wood so much better - I can grab a log, swing the house 90 degrees and drive through the woods. I try to leave lots of trees standing, and there's usually no...

    New 4' T8 w/o a ballast?

Thanks - great info. Exactly what I was asking about.

    New 4' T8 w/o a ballast?

I don't want to buy "throw them away when they break" type fixtures. That seems like a huge waste. If the fixture has a 50,000 MTBF, and I have 50 fixtures, I'll expect 1 to fail every 1,000 hours of use. 1,000 hours divided by 8 hours per day is 125. So, I'd expect to have 2-3 lamps to fail...

    New 4' T8 w/o a ballast?

My intention is very clearly to not throw them away. Can we not get bogged down in specific words? I take them to electronics recycling, they will end up in a landfill somewhere; probably India, now that China is no longer taking our trash.

Hammer Drill vs Rotary Hammer: Help Me Choose

When using a hammer drill, make a pilot hole. It makes the 1/4" hole go so much faster (drilling twice seems to be faster than drilling once). For a 1/4" hole, I'd buy a hammer drill (already have one) and spend the extra money on something else.

    New 4' T8 w/o a ballast?

I am getting ready to build my house & shop, and think I'll need 40-50 4' fixtures. My preference is for replaceable LED "bulbs" that fit a T8 socket. I'd rather not buy 50 fixtures, modify them and throw the ballasts in the landfill. Has anybody found a new 4' T8 fixture that has no ballast...

New house, new shop construction project

In Fall of '17, I was told I could probably move in by the fall of '18. Spring of '18, I was told we would probably start building in the fall of '18. Fall of '18 - I was just told that there's no estimate of start date. There's a building boom happening, and the truss manufacturers are...

    Light Fixture Layout Collections

Platonic, This is a goldmine! Thanks for all the work you've put into it. I'm building a shop that is very similar to the very first one in this thread (30' x 40' x 12' - with a lift in the same place). It's been a few years since that was written, and wonder if you'd do anything differently...

    Pneumatic vise

Do you set the jaw pressure with air pressure? I've only used them in production, and on a cold saw. Cool, but probably not what I'd drop $400 on (not to say that you shouldn't).

    AmazonBasics Hand Tool Kits

This is fine. Amazon will sell a ton of them. It's going to be every bit as good as HF or Sears, for less money. I really don't understand all the complaining - it's not made for you and me. It's not marketed at you and me. Complaining about a cheap set of tools to put Ikea furniture together...
