Vintage Flashlights! Let's see 'em! Mods, restores, originals....

Gutta-percha - interesting product history. Insulation for electrical cables; Michael Faraday used it. That Yale torch came in two sizes, and one variation had a clever fold-out stand. A close examination of this one shows that two of the rivets were replaced (dome head) when the thin wires...

Vintage Flashlights! Let's see 'em! Mods, restores, originals....

What a coincidence - found this one today. Thought it was good, until I turned it over, bought it anyway. Just wondering what material to use in making up a new body for it. PVC pipe, a brass tube, steel tube, etc. Looks like it was a rubber body perhaps, which has hardened off with age. The...

Vintage Flashlights! Let's see 'em! Mods, restores, originals....

Interesting. Thanks for that. Yes, I was referring to the battle lantern. My post just popped up in the wrong place. So there were numerous mounting points for these lanterns around the ship, I guess ? Looks like a welded seam up the back of it ? A very solid item, made to last.

Vintage Flashlights! Let's see 'em! Mods, restores, originals....

There is some letter stamping on the back, on the mounting bracket. Can you read it ? Wonder if it had a wrist cord attached, so as not to lose it overboard ? Thanks.

    Old Ring Spanner

I found this rusty old Double-Ended ring spanner at a flea market recently for AU$2. One side is stamped 'CHROMEMOLYBENUM MADE IN U.S.A.' The other side '25/32 VLCHEK WBA 2425 3/4'. I'm guessing that this one goes way back to the 1940's, and is AF size, SAE, of course. Wonder what...

    Unusual Paint Scraper

caddyman Thank you. Now I know where it was made. Mine has no letter stamping on it at all, not anywhere. Wonder if K - D is still in business. Cheers. Looking up K-D, now part of GearWrench brand. K-D has a 95 year history. Believed to be the first to make laminated ratcheting...

    Unusual Paint Scraper

Thanks, all. I mentioned GEM because those safety blades came in a little packet, less than one square inch, back in the 50's, 60's. The little packet, you know the sort - you put it away somewhere safe but you could never find it when you wanted it, until you were looking for something else...

    Unusual Paint Scraper

Found this scraper recently, it has no stampings or markings. Opens to three positions with a locking catch. It takes the standard GEM safety razor blade. The clamp plate has long been installed upside down, as evidenced by the rust. The threads in both the thumbscrew and the body are partly...

    Hook Spanners

Here's an old hook spanner that I've cleaned up. Can't find any info on the maker HWW & Co Ltd. Anyone know anything about this make ? It's marked 1 3/4, 1 7/8, 2. Flipside has the number 3903. Could be British ? I've probably used it on the lock ring of the bottom bracket of bicycles...

    Steinadler

I did find a brief article on Steinadler some weeks back - can't seem to find it now. Seems that they were in business for just under 50 years before they ceased the manufacture of hand tools, spanners, etc. Looks like the name may translate as 'Golden Eagle'. There are a number of firms...

J H Williams vintage hand tools

Thank you, Lugnutz. I have a healthy respect for American tools, no worries. Still have the set of AF ring and open-ended Crescent spanners that I bought back in the mid sixties. Snap-on used to have a van doing the rounds/deliveries to workshops, often seen on our roads. The others that you...

J H Williams vintage hand tools

Thank you, Lugnutz. Very interesting. I'll try to improve the photos in future. AF spanners I slap some black paint on, a stripe. Make them stand out, easy to grab when your'e busy. BSW are red, Metric are plain. Makes it easy when you have a bunch of spanners to work on some vehicle or...

J H Williams vintage hand tools

Right. Thanks. It's a joy to hold - slim and balanced. I don't really need any more spanners but am always on the lookout for something different or unusual. Wonder if Williams produced spanner/tool sets for original kits in some American cars or trucks ?

J H Williams vintage hand tools

These two spanners, not Williams, I made by hand at my workplace about forty years ago. They were made to adjust the tappets of the '42 Indian 741 I had at the time (U.S.A. connection). 7/16" one end, 1/2" AF the other. Made from 'gauge plate', they were not heat treated for fear of warping and...

J H Williams vintage hand tools

Greetings all, Newbie in Melbourne. This Williams spanner I found at market; never seen a Williams tool prior. Saints preserve us ! Don't know what I've done here, but the image has reversed somehow.... Any rate, the 7/16" jaws are well used, but not much used on the other end, 17/32". It's...
