    22" entry door - repair/replace/diy?

I work in the Millwork Department for Lowe's. Most HD, Lowes, or Menards do not usually stock solid wood door slabs. Although your best bet is Menards as they do have their own mills and usually have a well stocked millwork department. The store I work in does stock prehung solid oak and pine...

    Window install question

+1 on the window and door spray foam!! Both DAP and Great Stuff cans for windows and doors are blue. Don't use any foam that does not say for windows and doors. Any other foam has an expansion rate that is too great for windows and doors and cures stiff, not allowing for building expansion and...

Best gap filler for driveway expansion joint

Dig out the old expansion material, back fill most of crack with sand, spray generously with weed killer, push in 3/4" backer rod, fill with sikaflex or the Qikcrete crack fill from HD or Lowes. Did this at the end of my drive 3 years ago and still holding up after driving on it daily, shoveling...

    Invisible Fence Installation

Ditto on IF, we've had one for 8 years and it works great! I've fixed several breaks over the years after accidently cutting the line and used the AM radio trick to locate the line when I had to have a new cable tv/internet/phone line cut in to the lawn. Keeps our 2 dogs, a lab and an Aussie, in...

Neckties and table saws are ok in California

Funny you should say that about box cutters/razor balde knives. I now work for one of the big box home improvement stores. (I handle the installed sales prijects) We are only allowed to carry/use box cutters with automatically retracting blades. Pocket knives are weapons and thus banned. Can't...

    Epoxy-Coat Failure?

Is it just the epoxy coat flaking off or is there concrete stuck to the back of the flakes that come up off the floor? Any photos of the spots or flakes? At a place I used to work we had both problems in different areas with a different mfg. of epoxy coating. One area we figured we were going...

how to keep dust down in the garage

Keep in mind if you use a sealer and in the future decide to epoxy the floor you have to remove all of the sealer in order to put the epoxy down. I have to drive 1/2 mile on a dirt road to our sub. Big fan of sweeping compounds. Regular house keeping is the best option until you seal or epoxy...

Sounds like a very experienced theif. When we switched our phone over to the cable company our alarm company installed a cell transmitter on the system to call them when the alarm goes off. Recommend a home security system?

Lots of good suggestions here so far. I've used a local alarm company for close to 20 yrs in 2 different homes. In addition to door, and window contacts I had them add a couple of glass break sensors and a couple of motion detectors to the house after a neighbor's house got hit. They threw a...

School me; Cabinet Staining screw up?

I use a high end bristle brush, It's so old I can read the name. It's a natural hair brush, can't remember what kind of animal it came from, paid like $25-30.00 for it 10 years ago. Go to a paint supply store, Sherwin Williams, Ben. Moore, etc. not a big box store. Tell them what kind of finish...

School me; Cabinet Staining screw up?

Sounds like the grain raised. Get some 000 or 0000 steel wool, or some 600 grit sand paper, and go over the doors and knock down the grain. I would opt for the steel wool. If opting for the sand paper just scuff lightly. Tack rag it again. This should bring the finish back to where you started...

    Solvent Question

Growing up on the family farm we used mineral spirits in our parts washer. A 250 gal fuel oil drum with one side cut out. Screen and expanded metal shelves in it based on the size of the parts. Did you know That T12 bulbs only have 2 years

My wife works at the Chrysler HQ building and they removed every other T12 from the fixtures in the walkway/hallways. The power and replacement bulb cost added up to almost a $1 Million savings. Word is that they will convert to T8 once all the extra bulbs are used up.

Raid any idea how long to break down in soil?

Re: Raid any idea how long to brake down in soil? +1 on how much did you use? Is the well used to irrigate a garden or just the lawn? If just the lawn wouldn't worry about it, if garden I would call the number on the can or email mfg. website on can. Most water tests do not test for insecticide...

Brick Question. Where is the water coming from?

Couple of quick questions; How old is the house? Did the brick leak before you replaced the roof or just after? I would recommend getting the wall scanned with an infra red camera. It will show you the path the water is taking when it leaks into the house. Although brick is porous it takes quite...

+1 on at least throwing a tarp over it. The vendor did right by you with the refund. It's the shipper that caused all the problems.
