Question for you plumbers out there

This is probably the best course of action. Pex is designed to be flexible. How flexible over time is a great question. Probably need a series of 45s to get out of that mess..

2x4 vs 2x6 insulated walls in Texas?

If it was me, I would take the additional square footage and use fiberglass over a smaller footprint with spray foam. In Minnesota were on the opposite end of the climate. If you do a good job with caulk or canned spray foam (great stuff etc) to seal every stud bay and all of the penetrations...

Before I buy my subpanel and feeder wire...

From what I’ve seen in my own research (and asking on this forum), a 100 amp main breaker subpanel is the way to go. It’s price comparison across most manufacturers is only an extra $30 more than main lug (at least from what I’ve seen with squareD) and it gives a means of disconnect. The 100...

    Insulation suggestions

Insulation with exposed trusses is extremely hard as I would think it would all have to be exterior insulation. Not sure what the appeal is in seeing all of the roofing nails or screws sticking through the roof deck, but to each their own. You could also put foam board underneath the roof...

    Upgrading Pushmatic Breaker Panel?

I think QO is probably the way to go. I’m no electrician but if you go squareD, definitely go QO over homeline. My brother wires spec homes and says a lot of the time they install homeline and it’s just an inferior product. I would definitely spend money on an oversized panel. As big as will...

    Insulation and Air Sealing

Better compromise would be buying some Great stuff with the $40 pro gun (the big cans make up the cost difference), and air seal all stud bays as well as electrical boxes, then use blown in in the attic and batts in the walls

Couple questions on a small framing issue for a remodel

    1. Should be fine. Even was load bearing (doesn't appear to be, nor should you assume it's not, but it's probably not), you're just furring out the inside of it to have something to fasten to. 2. Shouldn't be any issue with this, assuming nothing is creating a point load on the top of that...

New Detached Garage - Insulate or no?

Insulation on 440 sqft around here, even with 12’ ceilings and like r40 in the ceiling is only ~$500 with HD prices. Heat rises.. will insulating the walls help? A little. Will it make a large difference without insulating the ceiling? Probably not. Aside from your aesthetics of a open beam...

    Light Fixture Layout Collections

Looking for a lighting layout for 24x32x12. Drywall ceiling painted white. If there's anything comparable on this thread, I would love a link. Looked through ~20 pages and didn't see anything. Thanks!

Ceiling insulation question for a detached midwest garage

I don't know how much I'd be willing to "stack" on those rafters, as they're not engineered trusses. The common misconception people make is thinking they can stack everything up in their garage attic, when the wood was never designed to handle the load they're adding. Personally I would run...

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Garage: A Plea for Advice

The ceiling is something you should do yourself in terms of framing. $2000 is ridiculous. Go to home depot and buy 2x2x8 furring strips (1.5x1.5 nominal) for like $1 a board, and run them perpendicular to the existing joists at 16” OC. Believe it or not, hanging drywall is not rocket science...

Dewalt 20V vs 60V Circ saws

Hi all, I've heard mixed opinions about both the 20v and 60v cordless circ saws, and was wondering everyone opinion on them. Battery cost shouldn't be considered, as I already have a flexvolt battery (and will probably pick up another if I end up buying a 60v recip saw or something) The...

    Hardwiring a ceiling fan w/ a remote?

Well isn’t that a wonderful design.. I wasn’t aware of that. I’ve had very good luck with these fans in my house garage, and will be adding two when I build my detached up at the cabin. They come with a ceiling fan switch. Not the most aesthically pleasing, but for $80 and 9600 CFM for only one...

    Hardwiring a ceiling fan w/ a remote?

A lot of ceiling fans are designed to run on nothing but 110 volts, and the switches that come with them to vary the speed vary the current, not the voltage. The dimmer switches you buy at the big box stores (unless specified as a ceiling fan dimmer) are used for lighting, and achieve the...

Drywall Edge Around Garage Door - How To Finish?

I’m planning on framing in my garage door soon. The difference is my walls are 2x6 framing. Does that mean my jams should be 2x8, ripped down so on the front it’s flush to the inside of the exterior sheathing, and the inside edge protrudes half an inch past the interior? I believe that math...

    Passive Garage Ventilation Options

Are your walls insulated in the shop? the largest issue is you have SIPs for roofing structure, but if the walls aren’t insulated, you have all the hot air stuck inside your shop. Ridge vents would probably be the easiest way to deal with the issue. Ceiling fans are your friend. If the walls...

    Steel siding, sheathing or no?

The whole “jacking it up to lay courses of blocks” sounds like a horrible idea. You’ve mentioned the garage itself is already twisted. When houses are moved as a whole, they’re often moved while sitting on top of large steel beams. Whatever method you have of “jacking” the walls up could go...

Lets talk ceiling fans for the shop

Someone may have posted something like this already, but this sounds similar to what you already have: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-Industrial-60-in-Indoor-White-Ceiling-Fan-with-Wall-Control-52860/204507386 These move 9600 CFM on high, and they come with an adjustable speed wall...

    Split in truss lower chord

Here's that other thread: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=458929 It doesn't look too terrible, but it shouldn't be left alone. The biggest issue is the bottom chord in any truss is in tension, and this will essentially tear the beam apart ever so slightly when it's heavily...
