I'm not sure about the cheaper part but what you suggest is exactly what many people have done to add air/hydraulic to their HF motorcycle lifts. Unfortunately, to do so requires cutting and welding and although I can do that it is something I would like to avoid if at all possible.

txvwnut you are correct. I tried my experiment of removing the plunger and the only oil that would come out of that orifice is stuff that was already primed to go into the cylinder. When I pulled the release the oil cycled back into the jack's reservoir and did not come out the plunger area...
