What to look for in a cherry picker (engine hoist)?

I like the kind with legs that fold up, storage is MUCH easier then. I don't think that there really are a lot of "options", over the years they've all been pretty much the same, just different colors. Some have ALL the casters swivel, some have fixed casters on the ends of the legs...

pictures of your electrical panels here

ok, here are the photos of the in-house panel. The garage is fed off of the 60A breaker in the lower left. Seems to be a little more tidy as well. interestingly, only ten "single-slot" breakers in the house, and only nine used, while the garage has sixteen, and they're all live. --sarge

pictures of your electrical panels here

No water damage as far as I know. There's some white paint or primer splattered on the surface of some of the breakers, from when the PO did some painting. There is a bit of rust down on that bus, yes. I'm certain that the panel was re-used from somewhere, as some of the knock-outs are capped...

pictures of your electrical panels here

Wow. These are just way too neat and tidy, I'm going to have to bring the ugly back into this thread.... Here's the one in my garage. The only thing I've done in here since buying the house last April is put a 10ga run in for my welder last night. Another will follow for the compressor, maybe...

Left Hand Drill Bits - Need Some

I've used the $8 set from Harbor Freight to take out 8-10 broken studs in blocks/manifolds/heads/transmissions. I use'em with a pneumatic right-angle drill for getting into tight places while still in the cars. nothing's broken yet. They're obviously not made of pure awesomeness, but for...

Help! Just got a 60 gallon air compressor

I don't understand how a pad under the pump affects changing the oil, care to elaborate? --sarge

    Hydraulic press question.

12 ton should work fine, but i went with the 20-ton when I got one, for the bearings on my ****** back in the day. I saw a buddy's 12-ton, and it's way more "flexy" than the 20-ton. --sarge

    More compressed air system?

Are you not willing to have anything shipped to you? I live in a small town where sometimes there is nothing even within a 3-hour drive, depending what I need. If you build a system that's known to work well and last, there's no need to have a local supplier of replacement parts, since there...

Help! Just got a 60 gallon air compressor

i went from a standard skinny round filter directly off the head of my compressor, to super-cheap automotove Fram filter, and noticed less "thumping". Then I added a couple feet of pipe, and noticed a definite drop in the sound again. pretty crappy picture, but you can see the filter. 3/4"...

    Jorgensen Vise?

I stopped in last night and checked out the box, it says "made in china" right on it. This was, of course after work, before I checked this board again. I actually bought the Jorgenson, $100 for an 8-inch vise is just a darned good deal. IF I could get the craftsman pro in something bigger...

I'm not sure how to find that out.

Help! Just got a 60 gallon air compressor

for feet, I just cut up a 4x6 that I had lying around for feet, and some junk all-season tire that had a blowout: it removed the steel-to-concrete resonance that was occuring, and also stopped the unit from moving slightly (the floor wasn't so level right there). --sarge

Do you know your Cylinder Index?

    Jorgensen Vise?

Blain's Farm and Fleet (not to be confused with Fleet Farm) has them locally for the $100. Farm and Fleet page Jorgensen is one brand of the Adjustable Clamp Company. They also make the Pony brand of clampers. Here's AdjustableClampCompany's page for this vise, the "Professional Bench Vise...

    Jorgensen Vise?

finally starting to do some work in my own garage, and finding just how handy the vise in my father's shop was. Locally, I can get a Jorgensen "Professional Bench Vise With Swivel Base" on sale for $100, normally 130. It's an 8" jaw, which should be beefy enough for anything i'll be throwing...

wood stove questions and thoughts --please--

here's the 30+ year-old barrel stove currently in my father's garage: notice the round air intake on the upper part of the door. Behind it, is a channel that actually brings the air in at the bottom, but the stack is at the back. So the draft from the chimney moves the incoming air across...

    Homemade Chimney Soultions?

We use the insulated Selkirk or dura-vent (I can't remember which, available at Menards in this area). Here's a picture of what it looks like now, we've still not got any insulation installed. the outside's got the cap/collar/flashing on it --sarge

    Garage Intercoms

cat6 is only really necessary if you know you're going to be streaming a LOT of data at GigaBit or higher speeds. cat5e will work at GigaBit speeds just fine for most people. gigabit switches use all four pairs for data send/recieve instead of only two pairs like 10/100MegaBit switches. The...
