Sizing drill press quill return spring?

I am happy to report I acquired an Atlas model 54 drill press (12 3/4” size). Cosmetically, it has seen better days but everything appears to be in place, with no obvious play in the quill or spindle pulley. I’m excited to get started on the restoration. The only problem is the quill return...

Craftsman Block motor Bench Grinders - What's the Fuss (with resource information)

I got it to work! I had replaced the through bolts with ones that had a flat head. I ended up going back to the original ones with a hex head, which I think allowed me to get everything much tighter. I also was careful to keep everything level, but I think it was the extra tightness. Thanks for...

Craftsman Block motor Bench Grinders - What's the Fuss (with resource information)

I had to set this project aside for a few weeks. I just tried again to align the stator so there is no rubber with the armature. I tried the shims (only aluminum can strips would fit). I reinstalled the stator and I tried tightening the through rods holding the two body pieces together to...

Craftsman Block motor Bench Grinders - What's the Fuss (with resource information)

pwinters -- That is a very fine model. Nice power to do most home owner chores. Thanks! I should have started here. Interesting to know it came with probably the original start cap but a solid state motor switch from KB electronics. I have plenty of file folder shims so can give it another go...

Craftsman Block motor Bench Grinders - What's the Fuss (with resource information)

I have been restoring a 1/2hp (397.19440). I thought I was very close to the end of the process and have been testing the wiring. Everything works basically perfectly and smoothly when the grinder is tipped back 45 degrees or more. But when it is upright the grinder makes a very obnoxious...

Question about bench grinder motor windings

It works! I wasn’t understanding the ohm readings and what you were saying about the wires going to each winding separately. The two skinny and the two fat wires are each the leads for the two windings. They same wires are pairs. I am thrilled. Thank you!!!

Question about bench grinder motor windings

Thanks, let me work on implementing your drawing. I imagine being color blind, even a little, makes wiring more difficult! In the first picture I posted back at the beginning of the thread there are four wires coming from the windings—two with thick insulation and two skinny. Do you know which...

Question about bench grinder motor windings

Does this schematic make sense? If so, where do the four wires coming from the winding go?

Question about bench grinder motor windings

Sorry, I got confused. I have a 441 with the start capacitor. I am including some pictures of the solid state switch and start capacitor that came with the grinder. I had wanted to start with new components, thinking these were probably at the end of their useful life and I was pretty sure these...

Question about bench grinder motor windings

Thanks for linking to the manual. That is actually my model. So, it is 1.1 ohms across the two black wires. What does that mean? Shouldn’t I get readings between white and black? Instead, all I get are readings across the two whites and across the two black wires. Do you think this motor has...

Question about bench grinder motor windings

I don’t think there is an overload protector. I took apart the entire circuit (someone had already rewired once before). There are four wires coming from the windings. Here are a few pictures of the various combinations.

Question about bench grinder motor windings

I am fixing up a 1/2hp Craftsman bench grinder (397.19440) from the 70s(?). I tried wiring it up this evening and nothing happened. Using my multimeter, I get about 7ohms resistance across the start winding and run winding hot leads, but I’m getting infinite resistance between run and common...

    Confused by ratcheting crimper

That’s it! You are absolutely right. I bought the dies on ebay actually and it says Ideal Crimpmaster specifically as one of the compatible frames. It clearly isn’t. Thank you.

    Confused by ratcheting crimper

Interesting. It almost looks like the dots on the one in your picture are on the other opposite and the jaws are flipped vs mine. I have tried flipping the dies and they didn’t fit. The two jaws I have both are stamped 2H. I’m wondering if these generic ones are just no good…

    Confused by ratcheting crimper

Thanks, I did spin it all the way to the plus side but it didn’t make much if any difference. Can it spin multiple full rotations? Maybe it is really loose?…

    Confused by ratcheting crimper

A few months ago I bought an old Ideal Crimpmaster frame and a generic die for insulated terminals (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007888BXK/?tag=atomicindus08-20) Trying it for the first time last night I could not make a crimp. I noticed there is a gap between the die jaws when the tool...
