Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

I got them to credit me the difference in cost between 40A and 50A, which was minimal. They charged $700 for the "50A" circuit (about 25 ft from the subpanel), which I thought a bit high, but it stinks to pay that much and end up with a 40A.

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Good to know, and you're right, I'll probably never need the 50A circuit for this welder. Like I said, it's the principle if it that annoys me - it's shown as 50A on the plan, it says 50A on the wall, and I'm pretty sure I verbally mentioned it when he was here.

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

It's the PrimeWeld MIG180, which can run even on 120V, so I'm sure it's fine. But it's the principle of it that pisses me off :(.

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

A side note about the "idiot" electrician... In addition to the upside down outlet on the 30A circuit for the compressor, I asked for a 50A circuit in the garage for a welder. It was shown in the electrical plan, and being OCD, I drew its location on the wall and wrote "50A" next to it: They...

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Thanks for all the comments, it's a done deal and the compressor is in full operation. I decided to just rotate the outlet and use the 14-30 to 6-20 adapter cable. That preserves the 30A circuit in case I need it in the future, and was the easiest thing to do: To answer some other points...

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Thanks, I did forget about that part. Thanks for the reminder that I can't use the 30A breaker with a 20A outlet. Hmm, to swap to 20A outlet and breaker, or flip the 30A outlet and use the adapter cable.... Decisions decisions...

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Absolutely, I'd have to flip that outlet if I wanted to use the adapter cord. I think that if I start tinkering with the outlet, I'll just replace the 30A outlet with the 20A Leviton outlet that @sparky 1971 linked above. Cheaper, and cleaner looking, IMO.

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Agreed, but I think the premade connector for < $20 is easier :).

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Thanks @sparky 1971. I don't feel like rewiring the outlet (got too many other projects), so I'll just wait for the adapter cord to show up at my door tomorrow (thanks Amazon overnight!).

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

I realize that, that's why I am asking for help. I think this connector will fix the issue without dealing with the outlet:

Confused about cord plug on my "new" compressor...

Hope someone can help me - I picked up a 40 yo 240V 20A Craftsman compressor, but am having trouble finding a way to plug it into my new garage outlet. Here's the plug: And here's the outlet the electrician installed for the compressor: The outlet is a NEMA 14-30, rated for 30A, but I...

    SPGX Polyurea Clear

I ended up with two extra gallons of Armorpoxy SPGX Polyurea clear which I have no use for. Both are unopened/sealed, purchased in June 2025. They sell for $236 each, I'm asking $175 for one gallon or $350 for both. I also have the anti skid additive if interested. Located in Portland OR...

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT New 28' X 38' Garage Build in Portland

The GPR guy came out earlier this week and looked around the slab. He didn't see anything of concern, although when I asked him how deep the GPR can read, he said about 12-16". That would barely reach the bottom of the gravel base, so I frankly don't know if he would have seen any sinkholes if...

    Lift Disconnect and Outlets

Thanks for all the suggestions. Here's how I ended up setting things up: Power cord comes down from the ceiling and into the box 2 gang box, then to the box below with the paddle STOP switch, and then back up into the 2-gang box. The paddle switch kills power to all four outlets. The lift...

    Lift Disconnect and Outlets

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear - my plan is to use both a corded plug and a paddle switch, not one instead of the other. I like to have redundancy, especially given the potential catastrophic results of a runaway situation, as you mentioned.

    Lift Disconnect and Outlets

Me too. I agree with the other posts that a corded plug can be pulled in an emergency, and thus can serve as a disconnect. But I also think that in an "oh sh*t" situation, a red paddle is easier/faster/more intuitive to hit than trying to unplug a power cord.

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT New 28' X 38' Garage Build in Portland

Not much to update at the moment, we're expecting the Ground Penetrating Radar folks to come on Tuesday to look for any underground issues. Hopefully that will resolve the question about potential voids under the slab. As for replacing the leaky water pipe, the builder gave us the options of...
