    Automating dust collection

So here is where you are going to have to perform some work. I suggest simplicity again, buying up the Treemote Christmas tree remote control. The remote has two buttons ON and OFF. You are going to have to break into the remote control and investigate the circuitry for the ON and OFF...

Hey you guys pick heavy stuff up… what do I do with this thing?

A cushion tired forklift with a rigger's boom is what I would want for starters. Although it does not look like there is a lot of room on the sides of the main machine. I don't think you need a 15k unit (pictured). Something like an 8k is a lot of machine, the boom is something you or another...

    Multi-speed Drill Press

Yes, it's fast with the geared head. Different speeds needed for 1/8" pilot holes vs 1-1/4" thru holes...

    Steel vs wood

A pre-emptive insurance check would be good for a business. The steel framed building and "industrial" electrical work would be much more attractive to me from a flammability standpoint. Getting your plumbing roughed-in prior to your concrete work is important...the foundation for a red iron...

    Automating dust collection

Good point. There are some other tools available to automate. I would find an "ice cube" control relay which has a 240vac-rated coil (several of them) and you might need some with a 120vac coil as well. For each machine, the relay coil is going to wire in parallel with your T1, T2 of the main...

    Automating dust collection

A very simple reliable and cheap setup is to put a standard residential toggle switch box near the run/stop for each machine. It does rely on people to perform the start and stop, but if you placed the switches conveniently it would be a simple act. Then your run-stop circuit is going to...

Mounting Battery to Clap Board Siding with No Sheathing or WRB

I don't understand the desire to cut thru the siding as I don't see the advantage in disrupting the weatherproofing. I feel like the goal is to attach to the stud framing and I think it could be accomplished with just the pilot holes you need. If there is truly no backing past the stepped...

    Raised Ranch column removal.

So do you also have to source a 1/2" x 19' x 11-1/4" piece of steel flat bar to integrate between the LVLs? What is the fastening (cross-bolting) schedule? (how many holes total in the steel?) Hopefully you have a good way to drill all of those holes, hand-held drilling would take awhile, a...

I may have to live in a cardboard house!

I don't think its a bad plan, sure there are risks but plenty of people have piles of cardboard and SPF lumber stacked in shops and attics. I think it will give new meaning to "the walls are paper thin" :) A couple of points I would work thru...the walls are not going to have much racking...

Best idea for building a shop that can be moved

In the concept I described, you'd also use the lowest of the bottom plate to strengthen the connections just like the double-top plate concept, in essence if you had 10' wide wall sections you'd use 12'+ lower bottom plate to span the gaps. With the GRK-RSS screw you can just screw directly...

Best idea for building a shop that can be moved

This is going to sound crazy but bear with me...I think I would build a stud-wall building with this key point. Use no nails except in the roof if you decided to use asphalt shingles. I would first setup some sonotubes about 2ft deep every 8-10 feet with undercuts at the bottom for uplift...

    Building sequence question...

Agree on drip edge going on first on the low edges. Ice+water over top of that. Don't forget H-clips for keeping sheathing panel edges aligned. Hopefully you have uplift bracketry (Simpson H1Z, etc) or drove long screws into the bottom chord for same. I was really impressed with the...

What to do with a 6000 sq foot Horse Arena/ Pole Barn?

Wintering boats. Extra bonus if you keep it above freezing so lazy people don't have to drain all of their water systems.

How high did you build your shop above grade?

Not exact but the finished floor is approx 6-8" above the grade. It would take a 10,000 year rain to get that much standing water here.

Giant Air Compressor Salvage - Leroi Dresser 770A 15HP

Not sure if this size compressor has an unloader. That would be a great idea in order to essentially start the motor in a less-mechanically-loaded condition before it starts compressing air, thus significantly reducing the starting amperage requirements. In smaller compressors the motor starts...

    Lathe Tool Holder Rack

Nice idea! Did you glue in the rods or just friction-fit with the "spring" of the "U"?

    High Amp Battery Charger

Probably out of your price range but Honda's small EU portable generators have a 12vdc charging kit. I don't think it meets the 80-100A spec but keep in mind that the battery can probably only charge around 30A from the alternator anyway, once the engine is underway. My thinking is that if...

    Tap Handle for Hand Reamers

My thought is you want to bore those holes first with a single point tool to correct the alignment and get a basic (under) sized diameter. Then ream for finish and final diameter. Personally I would want to perform both of those in a mill like a Bridgeport. Long boring tool to be able to...

The dilemma of locking up my tools

Bubba Fett's idea of car covers is perfect. Then nobody has any idea what's underneath. Following that idea, blinds or translucent window-film keep those prying eyes out. I work with overhead doors closed as much as possible to preserve interior humidity stability.

Metal (and related abrasives) dust collection solution

I try to do all hand grinding outside. Ditch the abrasive saw for a true coldsaw or a bandsaw. It took a lot of convincing at work that a weld booth bench shouldn't double as an angle-grind bench but now one can go weld and not come out looking like a chimney sweep.
