Sears Could Be Gone If Slump Lasts Through Christmas

My first thought exactly. I found out today that the Sears store (Washington Square Mall) down the road is closing Dec 7th, so much for making thru the X-mas season.

What route do you go? Box before tools, or...?

Tools then storage. I never understood the cart before the horse approach, but give it a month a young tech will be asking on here what oversized and overpriced box to buy from his school for the 23 piece tool set his parents bought.

    Cheap tap & die sets?

I'd get the cheap set to start out with, use, and abuse. Save back some cash and call Harry Epstein down the road. - Metric set 3 - 12mm $135.85 http://store.harryepstein.com/cp/TapDieSet/26317.html Standard and larger sets are also available

Do you guys keep your power tool boxes?

I generally don't use plastic cases or trays, so I put them in a big box, mark the contents, and toss it in the attic next to the holiday decoration totes. On occasion I'll keep a cardboard box up in the attic, typically I toss it when the next holiday comes around. :lol_hitti Hope that...

What should I do* about getting screwed by Sears?

Re: What should I about getting screwed by Sears? Absolutely, it's the most productive thing to do on this forum. Call the store, Sears should have a surveillance system near the register and doors, video will help to uphold your story. Good luck

    looking for a socket set

I know what you mean about a cheap set, because off-road you don't want to dig in mud looking for a $30 socket. I like the ugly multi-colored HF socket sets for $5 (with coupon), because I don't care if one or five get lost and most people won't steal them. This set is less than $20 covers...

    Filling the Craftsman void?

I enjoy buying used tools off my fellow GJ members, and honestly never thought about it until this thread, all new purchases have been industrial brand tools (mostly proto & williams). Also, I like the thread disclaimer

    Used tool sellers rant

To your defense, in Indianapolis you can be on a totally different side of town in 15 minutes or less :3gears: It's CL everything is a gamble for the buyer and seller. But you would have been better off putting it on the curb with a sign of $5 obo and the bench would have grown legs :lol_hitti

    HF Underhood work light.

I noticed that HF raised the price this month, I got one to try awhile ago for $23 out the door (with coupon). First time I used it under a hood, I took it to a neighbor's garage to do a compression test and his fluorecent shop lights over powered the LEDs. I did like that the ends unscrew...

    16mm sockets and wrenches.

Yeah, store brands do this often so you have to buy the SAE set to get the crossover metric sizes of 8, 11, 13, 16, and 19. Double the profit

Tool prices over time. Cheaper or more expensive?

Absolutely, 2003 I remember less than $2 a gallon for gas :eyecrazy:

Tool prices over time. Cheaper or more expensive?

Nothing political to be said with this statement but taxes and energy costs were a lot lower too. Last year I was at an estate sale, I bought an old Craftsman circular saw with a crown top metal carrying case for $10. When I opened the case I found the Sears receipt with a total of $37.62...
