Looks like you've mounted a white-ish looking plate / cover to the bottom of the housing where the post would have went. Was that plate included or something you fabbed up?

I do plan to have rack shelving in the space, so I think your suggestion of the lights being parallel to the walls makes great sense. What do you guys think spacing between the lights would be best? 2', 4' ? I don't want to go too much and have dark spots between them.
