Reason for ISO nuts being 1mm narrower across flats than DIN in some sizes

I do consider it a poor showing on the SAE side that there's no SAE based torx, triple square etc. Don't quote me on this but I believe there's two din flange head bolt standards with like 2 or 3 different bolt heads

Reason for ISO nuts being 1mm narrower across flats than DIN in some sizes

I assumed it was part of the universal efforts by engineers to annoy mechanics. Interesting to find out the actual reasoning tho.

    Speed wrenches…anyone use them?

I kinda want to try them but suspect I'd A) never think to grab them out and B)the intersection of fastener I can't fit a ratchet on and also can't be snugged up by hand is slim.

I'm sure they're just tightening it up

It's the nice thing about standards, there's so many to pick from.

    Astro Pneumatic Tool Company

I'm curious if it's part of mechanics etc having to buy their own tools. If they're shop supplied tools the shop can deal with replacements at the most cost effective way to them

Tools you bought just because, "Some day, I might need that !"

3/4 torque wrench, the crank bolt on the td5 in my disco needs 460Nm and the axle nuts are similar so when one popped up for auction thought why not. Did eventually use it after the harmonic balancer decided to become a multi parter but it spent enough time gathering dust I used it to torque up...

    Astro Pneumatic Tool Company

Out of curiosity is there much to them past a pair of solenoids and a pressure sensor (plus display, interface and a microcontroller)? Realised I've got most of the bits to attempt to make one.

Carrying wrenches in a tool bag/tote

I've got a cat 211-0136 that I've been using for a handful of jumbo spanners (30,36,46, 50 and 55), was about the only thing I found that was long enough without also being huge. Didn't want it to collect tools and end up being super heavy

Ever heard of an 8/16th wrench?, seen a video of one yesterday

Hazard of both being Aussie and younger (31), I grew up on metric. Tho coming across AF at work is better than BA or Whitworth. Probably hersey to y'all that use AF daily but I'd enjoy a set with only X/8 or X/16th markings

Tools that need to be quality

There's a time and a place for cheap tools. If you're only doing the job twice and more likely to lose it in the decade between this time and the next. That kind of stuff. Or because you're using it under water on shackles (admittedly that's a tad specific)

What's the best tool you've ever bought?

Depressing not that often, it generally goes something like this. I have a problem, the internet says if you have $brandname version of X tool it's easy, go to tool shop, see price of $brandname tool, see knockoff next to it for significantly, ponder if I'll actually do said job often enough (or...

How do you "ensure" the crimp is where you want it?

Getting the strip length right really helps, either exactly the right length or consistent and just long enough to see it coming out the other side of the crimper jaw. If you're gonna be doing that connector on a regular basis the OEM tool generally has locators etc that make it easier

    The 1/4” Square Drive Thread

Some of them do have sufficiently close metric or fractional AF equivalents that it's eh for low torque stuff or one offs (shockingly enough BA insulated nut spinners aren't common) but not everything. They do tend to be obnoxious fiddly and hard to replace too so you don't really want to ruin them.

Anybody use this type of battery lifter?

Depends on the battery tray, I've had vehicles where the access is great and they're easy to lift out. I've had others where there's no room to get your hands down and underneath to lift the battery.

    The 1/4” Square Drive Thread

What stuff has that much BA on it? I'm a railway signal technician in Australia and some of our older equipment is BA (generally the older UK stuff).

Tools to have in order to avoid abusing other tools

Little 8oz stubby claw hammer, light and small enough to carry even when you're not planning on needing a hammer useful enough for anything that would otherwise be done with a hammer substitute. I'm a fan of demolition screwdrivers, makes me significantly less guilty when I'm using them as a...

    Borrowing Tools

That's a good way to do it. Tho oddly enough these days it's mostly my dad borrowing my tools. Mechanical ones atleast, he's got more house maintenance stuff
