    Harbor Freight Bench Vise opinions

I bought the Doyle 6" vise for the shop. It has taken almost 3 years of abuse from 8 techs and still operates smoothly and holds great. I honestly prefer it to my Snap-On branded Wilton bullet. If it disappeared today I would buy another without hesitation.

    SEMA Now *****!

I for one am glad the "booth babes" are going away. There were a few in other rooms, I stood and watched their uncomfortable faces as 65 year old dudes flirted with and hit on them and told them to "stick out your *** more". It was painful and I felt really bad for them. On the other hand, the...

Why the flashing light option on work lights

It means the manufacturer spec'ed the cheapest universal LED driver chip they could find. When I looked it up they were under 4 cents each retail.

Which DeWalt 20v Battery to buy?

My 1.5 and 2AH batteries are only used with the 1/4" impact, 3/8 electric ratchet and hot glue gun. The drill, reciprocating saw and angle grinder work so much better with the 5AH that they seem broken with the lower spec batteries.

Current recommend for a regular screwdriver set?

I'd like to say thanks for the SunFlag driver set recommendation. I bought the last set available and while I am pleased enough with the drivers themselves, I am more surprised by the fact that they have proven that the stainless "phillips" sheet metal screws that Fastenal fills our bolt bins...

    HF Maddox tail pipe expander

2.25" Stainless muffler expanded to 2.5" with the HF Maddox expander kit I needed an Expander kit and the HF is a block away. I am very pleased with how well it works. The thread appears to be M18X2.0 if that info helps anyone

Bridgeport Mill, what is it worth?

In the Pacific Northwest you won't find a J-head Bridgeport for under 4 grand..... ever.

Looking for opinions on Eastwood 135 MIG welder

The Eastwood 135 was discontinued a while back and was closed out for $199. Whether or not $599 is a good deal is up to you to decide My question is, what are you looking to weld? 135amps is not a lot and has a realistic limit of 3/16" thick steel that it could weld together depending on the...

What product to coat bare aluminum to keep looking good?

Sharkhide is made for aluminum boat hulls. Goes on completely transparent. Seems to polymerize, the rag I apply it with will turn stiff. It is probably a more common finish just marketed towards a specific application. I am pleased with the results it gives.

    Tap handles for tiny taps

For taps in the #6 or M3 range I use either the old Starrett No.0 or the General No. 163. For anything smaller like that M1 tap pictured, I make a little thumbwheel holder with a set screw.

Air vs. battery - I guess I'm old school, no more

My ears are ringing just looking at this picture. I never got into air ratchets based simply on how absurdly loud they were.

    Inexpensive Dimple Dies?

I buy the cheap Woodward Fab punch/die units each time I need a different size. I have good luck with them. Alas, they are a bit over your budget.

Cure for plastic handle white fungus?

One of my techs took a month off. When he came back he accused his coworkers of pranking him because his toolbox smelled so bad. I walked past the box, sniffed and asked him if he used the clear handled screwdrivers. He opened the drawer and there were a bunch of Craftys just starting to turn...

    Set screw for Stanley 99e

Pulled the screw from mine. I would describe it as a 10-32X5/8" Oval head.

Best “vise grip” or locking pliers with the easiest release?

This made me curious. NOS Petersen 10R Made in USA. From the 80's or early 90's VS Tekton PLK0010 Tsubosan made in Japan Rockwell hardness testing files. The 55HRC file skates on the Petersen, it will almost take a cut on the Tekton. It might just be marking the plating on the surface...

Best “vise grip” or locking pliers with the easiest release?

I am also curious why the hate for the Tekton. I bought a few dozen on a big sale about 5 years ago and genuinely prefer them to all the NOS Petersen vise grips I collected because GJ convinced me they were awesome. I use them for general metal fab work, not rounded hardware extraction.
