Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

Thanks guys. Yah the guy lived right down the street from me. He bought a newer Kobalt box and wanted to replace the craftsman boxes. I feel very fortunate to have them. I love those midboxes.

Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

Picked up this stack today for $150. Everything is in perfect shape. Even came with two sets of original keys for each box. The guy was also selling that black and red box for the same price but I passed on it. It was in just as nice shape. The sellers listing is on the Prescott, AZ craigslist...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Hello everyone. I recently picked up this Reed 204 1/2 Vise for $75. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the base was previously welded for some reason and then the weld was removed with a grinder by the looks of it. Besides that, the vise doesn’t have any other problems. I’d like to fix...

    Another "what is it" tool.

Hey guys. I need some help identifying what these are. I found them in a Kennedy 520 tool box that I recently purchased. The tips are somewhat sharp and they appear to have striking caps on the handles. Any help is appreciated. <img...

Your Favorite Tool Purchase of 2017

I'd have to say either my Wilton C-1 that I restored or my 19 piece set of metric SK wrenches. Very impressed with both.

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Thanks Outlaw, I'll give that a shot. I don't really want to replace the lead screw since it costs more than double what I paid for the vise!

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Just curious what methods you guys use to remove rust off a machined surface but retaining the original machining marks. Also, what's the best way to straighten a mildly bent lead screw handle?

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thanks 007! You are correct. The static jaw has 2 pipe jaws and the dynamic jaw has one. The dynamic pipe jaw is offset to slide in between the two pipe jaws on the static jaw. The jaws have a lot of play but that is by design according to Yost so the jaws can settle into the pipe when you are...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Picked up this Yost 33C for $80. The man I bought it from said that it came off an old military wrecker. It weighs about 100 pounds and has a 5 inch jaw width.

The plastic versions of the badges have little clips. You slide the badge up, not pulling on it or prying it up, and they come out. The metal badge versions have little retaining clips on the back side that you pull off.

I got some wilton vise pins from Dave at wiltonvisepart.net. He included them when I emailed him about them when I ordered a set of new jaws for my C-1.

Questions about refinishing mid 80’s craftsman boxes!

Rolling on paint will not be nearly as smooth as spray paint. If you want to take this project on, make sure you get the surface as dent free as possible before painting.

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Here's some pictures of most of the "good stuff". The box cleaned up to almost brand new condition. The felt looks brand new after vacuuming. Lots of interesting German brands I've never heard of. The vise is really cool and doesn't look like a cheap knockoff so it may be German as well. Looks...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Haha. I thought is was an OK deal. I'm not too familiar with Kennedy so I wasn't really sure what they go for. Turns out, the majority of the tools are actually German and many of them have never been used. Lots of brands I'm unfamiliar with too. There were quite a few craftsman, indestro and...

Did I buy a boat anchor?

Definitely not a boat anchor. It doesn't look like it's very rusty and I'm sure it can be free'd up. Try checking out the vise restoration pages on the vintage tool section of this site. If you want to get a replacement end cap and nut pins, this vise had 2 on each side, contact Dave over at...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Does this Kennedy tool box seem like a good deal at $200? It is packed to the brim with older USA made hand tools as well as a few machinist tools.
