LEGO Technic cars on the wall instead of the shelf — how I mounted my son's collection as garage art

The wall-mounted Technics look absolutely fantastic, @sashik3. Well done!

    Quarter Turn Gas Caps

Why wouldn’t fuel pressure be released through the carburetor even without the engine running? If the fuel supply line valve is closed, I guess the pressure could build up in the tank. Perhaps thr float bowl valve would force pressure backwards?

Checkout the new Tekton 1/4 aluminum spinner handle/driver - Dope!

^^^ I’d buy that nylon handled one. The picks with that handle are excellent. The machined aluminum one that looks like somebody put a 1/4” drive on a tactical flashlight? Not for me.

    Clear (acrylic) Sump Basin Cover?

Polycarbonate’s big advantage is super-high impact strength. Its downside is that it weathers, and can be crazed in contact with water. Acrylic’s big advantage is super-high weatherability and UV resistance. It has very low moisture absorption and sensitivity. There are impact-modified...

    DIY/Wood Car Stands(Cribbing)...Let's see them!

Probably OK… But I’m just not crazy about seeing CMU’s to hold up a vehicle.

    What kind of wood?

If you’re serious about finding out exactly what species your lumber is, @BlackdogGS, the USDA’s Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin used to offer (and I believe still does) a free service to use their experts and extensive reference sample library to identify wood samples. I...

What's the difference between these two Craftsman wrenches that one is listed for nearly ten times as much as the other?

Two different sellers with vastly different expectations. Nothing unusual there.

Cast iron bandsaw table has a bow in it.

The way my father used to say it was, “We’re not rich enough to afford cheap tools.”

I Might Have Been Wrong On RaceDeck

I’ve found SuperClean — the purple stuff — to be one of the best water-based degreasers. i use it all the time, including a spray bottle under the kitchen counter, where I like it better than Dawn liquid detergent. There’s also Northwoods Trapper degreaser, d-limonene based with one of the...

Pros/cons of French-style "clés à pipes" socket wrenches

My friends, Lugz, have shown me how they increase the leverage on a socket wrench like these. They put the socket end of a larger wrench over the free socket end of a smaller wrench on a fastener to extend its length. Sorta like using two combination wrenches together for leverage (but...

Pros/cons of French-style "clés à pipes" socket wrenches

Nah -- it's whatever fits. My friends in France usually use a screwdriver as a tommy bar.

    8-Point Sockets

Knipex. Probably a dozen or more threads on their plier wrenches on here — have a look some time if you’re interested.

Pros/cons of French-style "clés à pipes" socket wrenches

That’s a good deal. I tend to like 12 point on the short end / 6 point on the long end, but for the money and the range of sizes 6/6 is perfectly OK here!

Can we completely replace our combo wrenches with ratcheting ones yet?

I use my reversible ratcheting combination wrenches probably 90% of the time. The times I don’t are for a size not in my Craftsman Professional/Industrial or FACOM gear, a clearance issue, or where a lot of force is going to be applied and I don’t want to risk the wrench.

    Tools of Japan

As a throwback-Thursday offering to the Tools of Japan, here's the metric socket set our family got c 1973-4 to work on our European cars (a Fiat and then an Audi). This set is made of some metal with about the consistency of cheese, but it was worked for many, many years. I had a second one...

    Tools of Japan

Yep, that's what I usually do on my Lexus RX's 2GR-FE. Still makes a mess. Unscrewing the whole kit and caboodle holding it in a shopping t-shirt bag helps. OK -- hijack off. Let's put up one that might give Japanese tool fans a fun memory...

    Tools of Japan

Motivx also offer a beautifully-made Toyota filter canister drain tool that works tons better than the nasty little plastic spout that comes with Toyota-Lexus filter cartridges.

Screwdriver Sunday … let’s see ‘em

Daiso, the Japanese dollar store, had these Proto knockoffs on the rack a couple of weeks ago. Made in China in both slotted and cross-point configurations, and not bad for a couple of bucks.

    Tekton Auto wire stripper

I've been using a Weicon No. 5 for decades. I have my old one and a new one I picked up on a trip to Europe a couple of years ago. I like 'em a lot.

    Drywall anchor repair

It was meant more to challenge thinking than any real practical expectation, but I've had surprisingly good results with 3M Command Strips. Much better than I expected.
