    Vintage Power Tools.

i used to have a pre-war "Mildon Dual Action Compound Miter Saw"... the only one i had ever seen. basically a double compound sliding miter saw, with arms, rather than a slide/rail. worked awesome, used it for metal cutting, though it was made for wood. the thing weighed 230lbs. got it, as...

    A Reminder

hmmm.... they all need to be hardwired, here (upon sale/purchase of a home, anyway)... haven't seen many battery powered in a while

    My Low buck build

looks great... what part of NW PA? I'm from outside of Pittsburgh, been all over the state tons of times. Haven't been back since I moved West some 20 years ago, but it's a beautiful state, 'specially up your way...

    crazy idea

had a shop with two walls of corrugated galvanized sheet on the inside... looked nice, but f'ing LOUD inside when grinding or doing other kinda high-pitched noisy stuff... makes you realize just how much drywall absorbs sound...

    Small Shop - Ideas?

while i likely can't give any good suggestions utilizing the space you've mentioned, other than "pegboard is your friend"... i might suggest this: rather than showing a neat, tidy, functional workspace in that little area... which could show that's all you need; show a messy, piled up, barely...

    12 x 20 x 8 Not A Building

gin poles are antique technology??? :) a few years back, we used a gin pole to erect most of a house... in the hills, tight squeeze between other homes, gin pole fit better and worked quicker than a crane would have (if the crane would have even fit up the tiny 1 lane roads). plus, it saved...

challenging all for "smallest shop" award...

yeah... you win! should have known somebody from 'cross the pond would have something smaller... 8' narrow shop has to be rough! i've got a mate in finland who's shop is only 1.8M tall at the highest... (about 6'). the dude is 2M tall.

Amazon deal on Drill Set *136 Piece Denali Titanium Set*

denali is a made-in-china house brand for amazon... think they used to sell at some lower end parts stores, too. wait for a deal on Milwaukee...

    Exhaust Fan

is it a sealed motor? ...i don't like venting anything potentially combustible with a non-sealed motor. had a friend some years back who vented his negative-pressure spray booth with a whole-house fan (attic fan)... he walked out of the booth, moments after spraying, to get the phone...

    Eureka!

Product placement, maybe.... there was a medium sized box last season. dig the show a lot, but haven't seen this season. moved to portland a few months ago, TV not set up yet (nor is much of anything else in the house)

    Starting a Tool set

surprised nobody's mentioned this yet: garage sales, yard sales and estate sales. i've bought roughly 3/4 my tools at yard sales. craftsman, some old snap-on and mac... then some really old tools that i use daily. a lot of old tools... even a lot of old no-name stuff... was built much...

    Crazy/Stupid things you have seen

some dude put ~500lbs of lumber (2x6x20, 2x6x12, 4x4x8) on the roof rack of his volvo, and eight 80lb bags of concrete mix in the trunk... when i got home, i made fun of myself. then i made another trip :) ~ used to be the foreman of a metal fabrication shop. we'd have people come in all...

More lifts to consider, Kwiklift and EZcarLift

another idea: keep an eye out for used car lots that are going under... a lot of 'em have the "display racks" that they drive a car up onto. i've seen a couple of 'em in peoples home shops. they work well, with very little modification, and can be sometimes had very cheaply.

challenging all for "smallest shop" award...

we built a "movable" shop some years back... broke up pallets, ripped 'em into ship lap for the siding, 4x4 steel tube floor frame (we had a LOT of it, at the time), salvaged 4x10 1" plywood flooring and roof sheathing, salvaged 2x6 framing. RV water connection on the side, hooked a garden...

challenging all for "smallest shop" award...

i gotta be a cheapskate with some (a lot of) stuff... stay-at-home wife, 20 month old daughter, 10 year old girl, pretty fat mortgage, bills, all that stuff. if i went and built the home shop of my dreams, there'd be no $ left for projects to build in the shop... or food... electricity...

Possible to convert mitre saw into chop saw?

i use an abrasive wheel in my hitachi compound miter saw quite often. the rear of the blade guard isn't plastic (where the sparks fly), so it seems to do well. i also have a very old milwaukee 14" abrasive cut off saw, but rarely use it at home... the hitachi does most of what i need. cut...

    Let's talk taxes....

in Oregon, after a getting building permit the assessor comes knockin' at the door about 4 months later to see it... assesses based on percent of completion. we're apparently getting the regular reassessments, as well... plus they show up after every home purchase. if you're not home, they...

challenging all for "smallest shop" award...

love it.... everything about it. 'specially the Assessor's reaction! the Assessor came knocking at our door a couple weeks ago. Said he was an inspector, and i kinda didn't hear anything after that... just was thinking "$hit, $hit, $hit"... then when i realized he was a tax assessor, i got...
