    Let's see your axes

First post in this thread. I searched first and didn't see anything, but maybe I missed something obvious. Going to look more. Picked up this Craftsman Vanadium axe today at a garage sale. With a set of 3/8" letter stamps for scale. It looks like the back face was used as a hammer more than...

Carbon or HSS on this tap and die set I just picked up?

We exclusively use carbide taps at work to "open up" threads that shrank at heat treat. 58-62 Rc D2 tool steel. Carbide taps dont get used in "soft" metal, The teeth will chip. They buy us fancy Sandvik HSS taps to run in cnc machines that will put hundreds if not thousands of tapped holes in...

Bonney new old stock socket set.

I love old 1/4 drive sets in metal boxes, however a lot of older 1/4 sockets don't have detents in the sockets. I won't use them as I have plenty of sockets with detents. Not sure if that's the case here. Can't tell from the pic.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Most sellers use some arbitrary measurement when they say 8 inch vise. Usually it means opening. That appears to be a Wilton C1 or C2 combo vise, 4.5" or 5" jaws.

    NOS Prentiss vise jaws

The recipient, an unmarked Prentiss no. 4 that is my dad's. He bought it without jaws and it's currently sitting in my basement. He will be able to use it more if it's bolted down in his barn. Lol!

    NOS Prentiss vise jaws

Picked these up today from the local vise guy. The packaging is crumbling, I'm going to open them up and put them on a vise. Thought you would like to see the photo. I'll take more when I open it.

    Monarch 225 Bench Vise

There are plenty of examples of prentiss vises without cracked slides that exist. I own a few myself. Usually when a slide cracks, it will make the slide slightly wider and will give resistance when opening/closing. I just can't see workers squeezing cracked slides into vise bodies when new.

Torque wrench calibration- how often do you send to a service

After my dad retired from wrenching, he gave me his Mac dial torque wrenches in 3/8 and 1/2. We have a Skidmore tester in the inspection lab at work, both were right on the money.

Meadville vise lock nut retaining pin removal

Hey no problem! I have a Rock Island vise, same deal couldn't see pin on the bottom. Because someone had welded the hole up and instead of a pin there was just a heap of weld holding the main nut in. Sigh. At least you didn't find that!

Has anyone had any good experience with plasti dip rachet handles?

I think using a snug fitting piece of rubber hose would hold up better than plasti dip. probably get the hose cheaper, too.

Meadville vise lock nut retaining pin removal

I see a circle right by the casting void. Looks like the pin may have been ground flush with the casting.
